Essentials for All Diaper Bags

Moms know, stuff seems to pile up with each kid that you add to your family. The most intense stage for me is the baby stage, when you have to carry all of the baby’s things AND carry the baby. My 12 month old is so close to walking and once that happens I will feel like I’ve finally “arrived” in some ways. My baby boy is so eager to be able to get around on his own. Up until baby begins to crawl or walk and even after, there are lots of essentials that you need to bring with you everywhere you go. After experiencing all the happenings that come along with having 3 kids, here is my list of diaper bag essentials for covering your bases without bringing too much along.

First you need a roomy diaper bag that has lots of pockets and is comfortable and sturdy to carry. If you are shopping for a diaper bag, you can find the biggest selection of diaper bags at Diapers.com. Diaper bags come in all styles and sizes with different features, patterns, price points, and brands. I’ve owned several diaper bags and I liked each one for different reasons during the time that I used them. Sometimes it’s just fun to get a new diaper bag when you find out you’re having a new baby.

This CiPU baby diaper bag is a universal bag with lots of storage; featuring 13 compartments and many accessories. Once you have your diaper bag, there are many items that are helpful to put in your diaper bad for feeding a baby, changing a baby’s diapers, and playtime on the go.

Feeding Diaper Bag Essentials

A baby bottle and formula is a must-have for taking baby on the go. Or if you are nursing, don’t forget your nursing cover. Many nursing covers also double as stroller blankets and changing mats so you don’t have to pack as many items into your diaper bag.

If your baby is eating solids, don’t forget to bring a tub of baby food, a bib and a baby spoon. Or skip the spoon and bring your homemade baby food along in reusable food pouch. Yummi Pouch reusable food pouches have a top zipper opening that allows you to pour in your own baby food and feed your baby from the side spout. These baby food pouches hold up to 6 oz. of healthy homemade baby food and give moms the peace of mind of knowing exactly what their little ones are eating. Plus food pouches that you can fill yourself are ideal for babies with allergies and food sensitivities. I usually fill up several reusable food pouches with baby food and store them in the freezer until I’m ready to take them on the go.

Changing & Diapering Essentials

Diapers and wipes are a must-have for including in your diaper bag. I like using cloth diapers at home and often bring disposable diapers for on the go.

You’ll also need a PUL wet bag if you want to bring cloth diapers along in your diaper bag and contain the smell of soiled diapers. I love the classic colors and fun printed diaper covers from Buttons Diapers, a family-owned brand that offers modern cloth diaper covers with snap-in inserts.

If your baby has sensitive skin, you’ll also want to bring baby powder and diaper creamBathtime Baby makes diaper cream that is formulated with natural, plant-based ingredients and infused with naturally-calming lavender oil. Luxurious!

Of course you’ll want to bring an extra outfit for baby, like this darling footed baby romper from Paige Lauren. Paige Lauren baby clothes are simple and unadorned, designed for moms who want the best for their babies. Clothing basics like this romper feature luxurious fabrics, fine tailoring, and subtle yet thoughtful details. Of course, a cozy baby is a happy baby!

Playtime Diaper Bag Essentials

Rattles, soft baby toys, and favorite stuffed animals are always great for babies. Each of my kids chose a favorite stuffie at an early age, and I’m hoping my little guy will take to this adorable Animal Pal puppy from Bears for Humanity. Made from 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton and filled with recycled materials, this puppy pal is also hand stitched in the USA. It’s the perfect size to tuck into your diaper bag for baby to cuddle a familiar pal throughout your travels, or even if you’re just going to the store. Just make sure to not accidentally leave it behind!

We also love unique toys like this Pebble hand knit block, handmade and crafted by Bangladesh women. The company provides fair pay, and flexible, local employment for rural women who are poor and often disadvantaged in Bangladesh communities. Pebble toys come in a wide variety of designs and craftsmanship is gorgeous; they will easily will become your baby’s favorite toy.

The Nogginhead light up Nogginstik is a fun sensory rattle and baby activity all in one. The head lights up in green, red, and blue colors as baby moves the rattle with the stick that is perfectly sized for baby’s hand. The Nogginstik base has a soft rattle sound and the bottom even has a mirror on it so baby can see himself. This Nogginhead interactive rattle features textures, lights, and sounds to delight your baby every time. In my case, my little guy loves grabbing his rattle and throwing it. The Nogginstik has held up beautifully and the light still brightly glows despite regular and rather rough playtime.

Babee Talk Eco-Buds Take-Along Pals are another fun toy that can be attached to the car seat, crib, high chair, or stroller. These portable little cushy playmates engage babies with soothing sounds and cute little faces. Eco-Buds Take-Along Pals are made using Organic cotton fabric inside and out and safe colorful fabrics made with low-impact dyes. Several of my kids have enjoyed playing with these cute little friends and attaching them to things.

Regardless of what you put in your diaper bag, as a new or seasoned mom, you will find your own routine for bringing exactly what your kids need. And if you forget something, you’ll find ways to creatively change your baby’s diaper without wipes or use a crinkly water bottle as a temporary baby toy. Other moms are also often willing to share, so if you desperately need that forgotten diaper cream, someone is bound to have some to spare. Mommy life is a process and I’m often not as organized as I’d like to be. But I have 3 happy and healthy kiddos who go with the flow fairly well and are growing up all together too quickly. ♥
