Any mom with a baby can tell you two things; babies poop and love to put things into their mouth. This reality makes diapers, hygienic toys and teethers bare necessities. Many options are available to cover these basic needs and I’m excited to share with you some Eco-friendly alternatives for teething and diapering that I’ve successfully used with my 3 kiddos.
Teething can be the worst few days of any moms’ life. A baby can cry uncontrollably, scream, and drool all over the place and not find relief until the tooth breaks through, and this goes in several cycles. I have found ways to help baby get through the teething stage, although life can still be hard for a few days. Here are some natural ways you can help relieve teething pain for your little one.
Baby Teething Basics
Ice Chips – Babies love chewing on small pieces of ice when they are teething. Small ice chips (less than 1/4 inch) are also safe for baby to enjoy one at a time because they melt quickly. Once we visited some friends in another town and my 18-month-old demanded ice chips all the way home (once we started she wouldn’t stop), which resulted in several gas station stops and an hour of crying in between ice chips. I felt so bad for her and I will always remember that experience. Ice chips helped!
Frozen Bananas – My little guy loves bananas and frozen bananas make an awesome teething snack. Toddlers will enjoy a cold treat and receive some relief from chewing on the cold banana. For safety, you could do this two ways; freeze an entire banana and wrap the lower part with a paper towel so your baby (18 months old and older) can hold it and suck on the top with supervision, or chop the banana up into tiny cubes (less than 1/4 inch) for your toddler to chew on. Use your own mommy discernment to avoid creating a choking hazard. You can also place frozen banana pieces into one of these mesh feeders so baby can chew on the cold snack.
Natural Wood Teether – Baby teethers come in all shapes and sizes, including these darling wooden teethers! Finn + Emma teethers are made from untreated indian hardwood using a non-toxic vegetable seed wax finish. They are filled with beans and make a soft shaking sound. These cute wooden teethers are made in India using fair trade practices.
Soft Silicone Teether – Silicone is another popular teething material because it is soft, hygienic and food-safe. Toofeze baby teethers are silicone teething toys with a twist, they feature a stainless steel disc that baby can bite down on and enjoy cooling teething relief. The stainless steel part of Toofeze can be submerged into ice water so that it gets super cold. The mom entrepreneur between Toofeze was inspired to create this unique hygienic teething design by baby’s tendency to want to chew on car keys. Toofeze comes in a variety of colors and can even be engraved as a personalized keepsake. My little guy enjoys chewing on both the stainless steel and silicone materials and the Toofeze design is easy for him to hold.
Teething Necklaces – Babies can also find relief from natural solutions such as wearing a hazelwood teething necklace. Hazelwood was used by native aborigines as a pain relief for centuries. Research studies indicate that properties in hazelwood have an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant effect. Studies show when hazelwood is worn continuously and close to the skin the effect can be absorbed by the body.
Teething Relief Gel – If your little one is really suffering from new teeth breaking through, you can try using oral teething gel. I just rub a little bit of this on my little guy’s gums to provide teething relief for up to an hour. Use it in moderation for sure, but it’s definitely an option when your little one’s gums are especially owie and hot. Teething relief from a natural homeopathic teething gel is a good option to help your little one feel a little more comfortable.
Cloth vs. Disposable diapers
“What do you use for diapering” can be a conversation starter in itself. Some moms are passionate about cloth diapering and even curate their own collections of cloth diaper covers and accessories. Others swear by disposable diapers because of the convenience and low maintenance care required. I started out 100% cloth diapering with my first child and slowly got burned out with the piles of laundry. True, cloth diapering is very easy once you get into a routine, but once I had two kids in diapers we had loads of dirty diapers. I ended up going the most convenient route for diapering my kiddos and discovered you can also live an Eco-friendly lifestyle while using disposable diapers, specifically ones that are biodegradable and made from bamboo! Who knew?
Andy Pandy bamboo diapers are disposable, don’t require any washing or care, and are made from high quality hypoallergenic and antibacterial materials; ideal for babies with sensitive skin. These disposable diapers for babies are made from biodegradable bamboo resulting in a soft and silky feel that is strong and absorbent. Bamboo offers moisture wicking and thermal regulating capabilities that keep your baby’s skin dry and comfortable in any temperature. Andy Pandy diapers are also lined with a natural aloe liner to nourish your baby’s skin and a wetness indicator that lets you know when baby needs to be changed. They do not contain chlorine, alcohol, preservatives, phthalates, latex, PVC, TBT, or antioxidants. Also a Green Scene Mom Award winner!
I found Andy Pandy bamboo diapers to be very comparable to standard disposable diapers, without the environmental impact. They are highly absorbent (possibly even more so than regular disposable diapers) and they attach with grippy side flaps and have gussets around the legs that provide a snug fit and protect against leaks. Because they are made from natural bamboo, these Eco-friendly diapers biodegrade right back into the environment when they are thrown away! Andy Pandy Eco-friendly disposable diapers also come in packs of standard diaper sizes so you can easily find the right fit for your child. I’d recommend checking them out for your baby’s diapering needs!
