Creative DIY School Supplies

by Katie Wallace | Updated: August 7, 2019

Any time of the year is a fun opportunity to get crafty. We love personalizing our home and life with creative ideas that are also budget friendly! My kids get excited about back to school because they get to pick out a few new school supplies. It’s always fun to personalize books and notebooks with colorful tape, stickers and school-inspired doodles. These ideas for making re-purposed pencil cans and custom book covers will brighten up any desk.

We usually start off the first week of school with some fun activities such as decorating our notebooks and making a crafty pencil holder. Kids can help with these crafts and customize their own school supplies. See our creative back to school ideas below!

DIY washi tape pencil can

Crafty Recycled Pencil Can

This recycled tin can project is a great container to organize your pens and pencils. For this project, you’ll need the following materials:

  • 1 tin can
  • craft paint
  • washi tape

Easily make a washi tape tin can pencil holder! First, thoroughly wash out the tin can and fully dry it off. If you need to remove the label and any leftover adhesive, you can do so using lighter fluid. Next, apply a thin layer of paint to the outside of the tin can. Allow the paint to fully dry.

Slowly peel off a long length of washi tape in the color of your choice. Pulling too fast can cause washi tape to break. Once you have a piece of tape that’s long enough to wrap around the can, begin on one side of the can, firmly pressing the strip of washi tape down as you rotate the can.

Repeat with additional strips of colored washi tape. I found it helpful to follow the lines on the can to evenly place the washi tape.

You can put pencils, pens and even rulers or scissors in a pencil can to keep them close at hand. These washi tape pencil cans are a super cute way to organize a desk or workspace.

Brown Paper Bag Book Cover

A paper bag book cover is a great way to cover your textbooks, and you can customize it any way you’d like. Paper grocery bags are sturdy and pretty much free. Furthermore, if you use a brown paper bag to cover your school book, you are creatively recycling! Use pens, tape and stickers to decorate the front of your text book and protect the book’s cover.

Washi Tape Notebooks

Washi tape notebooks are another crafty idea to customize your school supplies. I could only find a few styles of notebooks at the store and we wanted to be a little more creative. Each of my kids picked a notebook for themselves and we decorated the covers with strips of washi tape. We’ll use these notebooks for homeschool assignments and daily schedules.

To make a washi tape notebook, you’ll need the following materials:

  • Plain notebook
  • Rolls of washi tape

Decorate your notebook with strips of colorful washi tape. Carefully peel off long pieces and use scissors to cut the washi tape into smaller pieces. You can even make shapes and letters using washi tape.

All kids need some basic essentials to start the school year. Our family homeschools, so it’s up to me to make sure we are ready to start the school year. The last few years we’ve headed to Target for our back to school shopping. My kids love choosing their own colorful notebooks, pens, pencils and binders. We picked up these bright G2 Fashion White Collection 5pk and erasable FriXion Fineliner 12pk assorted pen sets, which are new at Target. These colorful pens are perfect for grading, making labels, marking lunches and even using during art class! Shop for these G2® Pens by Pilot Pen at Target in the pen aisle.

Get Organized for Back to School

As a homeschool mom, I kind of have to do it all. I teach subjects, make lunch, grade workbooks and enforce our daily routine. Being organized with new school supplies helps our family alot! G2® Pens by Pilot Pen are a great back to school essential for kids and parents. G2 is the ultimate pen for the everyday overachiever. You can find G2 pens in four point sizes and multiple barrel styles. The extra comfortable grip makes them easy to use and the smooth gliding ink comes in 27 bright and vibrant colors! It’s no wonder G2 is the #1 selling gel ink brand/pen brand in America (NPD, 2018).

The FriXion assorted pens are another great basic for kids, with erasable ink! FriXion writes smoothly with writing gel ink but also allows you to erase at any time. This is perfect for kids! I typically don’t allow my kids to do their schoolwork with pens, but the erasable ink changes everything! Of course my kids will love doing their math problems with a colorful FriXion pen.

For the last 100 years, Pilot has been at the forefront of design and innovation, delivering exceptional writing experiences throughout the world.

Going back to school can be creative and fun with a little imagination! Once you get your creativity flowing, you never know what you will learn next.

TRAVEL | KIDS | ADVENTURES 🌟 Creative family ideas! #createplaytravel

Did you know clothes driers are rare in Europe? 👚👖 Many people line dry their clothes, in an effort to be eco-conscious. When we find the occasional drier at a rental house, it has a water reservoir that we have to empty, almost every load. Often we line dry our clothes, which takes 2 days to dry. 🌟 Learning how to do laundry is one example of how traveling can inspire some lifestyle adjustments. Overall, our family is learning so much and creating so many memories as we explore the world. 🫶🌍🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures! 🌎🩵➡️ follow along! @createplaytravel#createplaytravel #worldschoolfamily #travelwithkids #adventurefamily
Shocker — in France, most candy is made without Shocker — in France, most candy is made without artificial food coloring! Can we do this in the US?? 🙋‍♀️ Asking on behalf of my kids and many other parents! 😄 Here’s why even Haribo is labeled with “sans colorant artificiel” in France:✨ Stricter EU regulations ban or limit synthetic dyes linked to hyperactivity or allergies.🌱 There’s a big cultural focus on natural ingredients and quality over flashy colors.👀 French shoppers read labels and avoid unnecessary additives — especially for kids!⚠️ Plus, any artificial dye used must carry a warning like: “May affect children’s behavior and attention.” (Yikes!)So instead of Red 40 or Yellow 5, French treats get their fun colors from plants — think beet juice, turmeric, spirulina, and carrots. 🍓🌿🌈Honestly? We love it. Simple, clean, and still delicious! 😋Would you try candy colored only with natural ingredients? Let us know! 👇
Major Rome highlight!! Things that surprised us at Major Rome highlight!! Things that surprised us at the Colosseum! 😲🇮🇹Stone passageways surround the arena, with three levels of seating — and beneath the floor lies a maze of underground chambers once used to hold wild animals and gladiators before battle.✨ We learned that the Colosseum could hold over 50,000 spectators, and it was built in just 8 years — incredible engineering for ancient Rome!We reserved special access to the top levels, where only 10 people are allowed every 30 minutes. Our family filled 6 of those spots! 🙌 Having those quiet moments above the arena, with no crowds, was surreal.📸 If you ever visit, definitely consider the extra ticket for this unique perspective!🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures! 🌎🩵➡️ follow along! @createplaytravelHi! When in Rome… 📸🇮🇹 Taking photos at the When in Rome… 📸🇮🇹 Taking photos at the iconic Trevi Fountain was more magical than we expected!💧Built in the 18th century, the Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome — and one of the most famous in the world. Designed by architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, it stands at the junction of three roads (“tre vie”), which is where it gets its name!We discovered there’s a crowd control system now in place — and it made all the difference! We stood in a short line to enter the front viewing area, completely free and without a time limit. We ended up staying for about 30 minutes, snapping photos and soaking in the view alongside just a few dozen other people.✨ It was such a cool surprise to enjoy this spot without battling a huge crowd. Definitely worth waiting for the photo op!📸 Is visiting the Trevi Fountain on your bucket list??🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures! 🌎🩵🌟 Hi! We created unforgettable memories exploring these We created unforgettable memories exploring these iconic Roman landmarks with our kids! 🇮🇹⛲️ Trevi Fountain — Built in the 1700s, this Baroque masterpiece is where three ancient roads once met. The scale and details are incredible! Standing 85 feet tall and over 160 feet wide, it’s one of the largest fountains in the world!🇪🇸 Spanish Steps — Completed in 1725, these 135 steps link Piazza di Spagna to the Trinità dei Monti church above. We all enjoyed the exercise while climbing these iconic stairs. 🏛️ Pantheon – Nearly 2,000 years old, it’s the best-preserved ancient Roman building. Our kids were amazed by the giant columns (each carved from a single piece of Egyptian granite) and the open oculus letting sunlight stream through the dome.Things we learned while traveling # 10 ☀️ History came alive for all of us in Rome!
