Plan Your Wood Wall Art Design
Design – It’s always important to have a clear plan when starting a DIY home decor project. To make these wooden trees, first draw a rough design on paper or lay out the concept before you assemble the pieces. We wanted to make 3 different trees in various heights.
Cut – Next, cut the fence boards in various lengths to create the tiered tree branch look. You can cut these boards using precise measurements or by eyeballing each length. We traced around a cardboard shape to make all the angled ends look identical. DIY wooden trees would look a bit wonky if all the fence board ends were cut at different angles.
Arrange – Finally, lay out each board to make sure the spacing and board lengths are correct. Pay attention to the flow of the design. You won’t want to end up with awkward angles or uneven spacing when you start screwing everything together. We spaced each fence board 1 inch apart and cut the boards for the tree trunks long enough connect all the “branches”.
Sand the Edges of Your Wood Wall Art
Next, cut the fence boards and sand the edges of each fence board. Sanding may seem like an optional step, but crafting homemade wood wall art well is worth the work in finishing the details. Un-sanded rough edges may give you splinters later or make your finished wall art look scrappy. It is much easier to sand all the pieces before you connect them, rather than trying to touch up edges later.
Screw the Branches onto the Trunk
Once all the fence board pieces are cut, sanded and arranged, connect them together using a few well-placed screws. We used two screws per fence board “branch” so they would stay in place and not swivel once attached.
Paint the DIY Wooden Trees
Finally, you can paint the trees with a watered down color, an opaque color or a wood stain. We wanted to create a colored stain look, so we added water to acrylic craft paint and lightly painted it onto the board. Craft paint soaks into unfinished wood and creates a shabby chic distressed look. You could even sand the painted edges once the paint dries to create some extra distressing.
Customize these DIY wooden trees using any natural stain or colored paint. You could use a variety of painting techniques to coordinate with a modern, farmhouse or vintage decorating style.
These easy DIY wooden trees made from fence boards are a gorgeous accent to stand in an entry way or hang up on a wall. The tree bases allow them to be leaned against the wall and arranged in a trio. Additionally, you can add a hanger to the back of the DIY wooden trees and hang them on the wall.
We will enjoy decorating with these DIY wooden trees for seasons to come! Unique home decor can be hard to find if you are working within a budge. Making your own home decor allows you to not be limited to store bought styles. These DIY wooden trees are a simple and eye catching addition for any blank wall!
