I love the coming of autumn, when the temperature gets colder and the trees begin to transform into a landscape of color. I especially love doing fun family activities with my kids to celebrate Fall! Often at the end of the summer, our apple trees are overflowing with gorgeous home-grown apples. Occasionally, one of the trees will take a year off from bearing fruit. However, this year we had so many apples, we couldn’t resist making delicious hand-dipped caramel apples! Learn how to make your own homemade caramel apples in just a few easy steps.
Homemade Caramel Apple Supplies
- assortment of apples that are ripe yet firm
- wooden skewers or medium twigs
- soft caramel candies (unwrapped)
First gather your supplies. To make hand-dipped caramel apples, you’ll need a quantity of apples, clean and rinsed sticks or medium sized twigs, and a bag of soft caramel candy.
Make sure to choose apples that aren’t bruised. We picked our apples straight from our front yard apple tree! Rinse each apple and near the stem, insert a wooden skewer or a clean twig or a small stick.
DIY Caramel Sauce
Make the caramel sauce by melting a bag of unwrapped caramel candies in 2 tbsp. of water. Heat the caramels over medium heat, until the caramel candies are fully melted. Stir the melting caramels continually until combined and smooth. Remove the caramel sauce from the heat. You’ll want to work fairly quickly to dip the apples, before the caramel sauce sets.
Dip the Apples
Next, dip each apple into the melted caramel, holding onto the stick. You can dip the apple completely into the caramel, or leave a clear space at the top of the apple (which I find to be less messy). Place each dipped apple onto a sheet of parchment paper to cool and set.
Homemade caramel apples are a festive treat to enjoy in the Fall! I’ve made these hand-dipped caramel apples for my kids, for our friends and just for fun! When I used thin branches instead of wooden skewers, I think the caramel apples looked a little more authentic.
To make a kid-friendly caramel apple snack, cut up each apple into small slices. Slices of caramel apple are much easier to enjoy than a whole sticky caramel apple!
I hope you and your family enjoy this delicious homemade snack that is inspired by fall!
