Learn how to make homemade caramel apples in a few easy steps! Apples dipped in caramel make me think of fall. I love when the temperature gets colder and the trees transform into a landscape of color. I especially enjoy doing family activities with my kids! I’m happy to share how we made this fun afternoon snack.
Homemade Caramel Apples
Easily make these yummy homemade caramel apples for your family, using apples and caramel candies. You will need the following supplies.
- an assortment of ripe & firm apples
- wooden skewers or medium twigs
- soft caramel candies (unwrapped)
To make homemade caramel apples, first gather your supplies. You’ll need a quantity of apples, clean and rinsed sticks, or medium sized twigs. You’ll also need a bag of soft caramel candy.
Make Homemade Caramel Apples
Make sure to choose apples that aren’t bruised. We picked our apples straight from our front yard apple tree. Prep the apples by rinsing each one and inserting a stick near the stem. You can use wooden skewers or medium twigs for homemade caramel apple sticks.
Melt the Caramels
You can make homemade caramel sauce by melting a bag of unwrapped caramel candies in 2 tbsp. of water. Begin by heating the caramels over medium heat, until the candies are fully melted. While heating, stir the melting caramels continually until liquid and smooth. Remove the caramel sauce from the heat. You’ll want to work fairly quickly to dip the apples, before the caramel sauce sets.
Dip Homemade Caramel Apples
Next, dip each apple into the melted caramel, while holding onto the stick. You can dip each apple completely into the caramel, or leave a clear space at the top of the apple (which I find to be less messy). Place each dipped apple onto a sheet of parchment paper to cool and set.
Homemade caramel apples are a festive treat to enjoy in the fall! I’ve made these hand-dipped treats for my kids, for our friends, and just for fun! When I used thin branches instead of wooden skewers, I think the caramel apples looked a little more whimsical.
Alternately, to make a kid-friendly caramel apple snack, cut up each apple into small slices. Slices of caramel apple are much easier to enjoy than a whole sticky caramel apple!
I hope you and your family enjoy this delicious homemade snack that is inspired by fall!
