Interactive Activities for Kids

Happy Spring! Spring Break is often a fun week for families, with kids out of school and a fresh change after a long winter. If you are a parent, you may wonder how to engage with your kids and entertain them during the change of schedule. Spring Break is great practice for summer vacation, when kids will be able to enjoy much more time at home and your family can make some fun memories exploring, adventuring, and doing fun activities at home. Kids will have lots of fun with this homemade moisturizing glitter playdough and imaginative sensory bins, as well as the recent Swan Princess DVD release! We are excited to share all the details with you!

Homemade Moisturizing Sensory Playdough

My girls love playdough and love glitter! They also love making DIY sensory projects at home. We made homemade glitter playdough eggs just in time for Easter. One of the most annoying things about homemade playdough is that it usually contains a lot of salt which acts as a preservative but also really dries out your hands while playing with it. Kids already suffer from dry skin in the winter, so I wanted to make some homemade sensory dough that would moisturize my kids’ little hands rather than dry out their skin! We swapped out some of the traditional playdough ingredients for alternatives such as conditioner and cornstarch.

Playdough Ingredients

2 cups water
2 cup hair conditioner
3/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup flour
1 tbsp. cream of tarter
Food coloring
1% Preservative such as Optiphen ND (optional)

Playdough Instructions

Mix together the water, hair conditioner, cornstarch and cream of tarter until fully smooth.

Heat over medium heat until the mixture thickens, continually stirring.

The cornstarch will cause the mixture to become a dough, drying out the longer you cook it. I added the 1/4 cup of flour at the end to make the dough a bit more dry and moldable.

Remove from the heat and divide the dough into portions. Mix a few drops of food coloring into each portion to make different colors of playdough. As the dough cools down you can add a few drops of the Optiphen ND preservative if using to maximize the life of your playdough and prevent mold. We just enjoyed our homemade playdough with conditioner for a few days and threw it away. After all, half the fun is making it!

Roll each ball of playdough in glitter and enjoy!

Homemade playdough glitter eggs are such a fun way to celebrate Spring! These eggs are still moldable. I rolled each ball of playdough in glitter and let my kids play with them. The cream of tarter gives this homemade playdough a stretchy consistency and the conditioner smells amazing and gives the dough a moisturizing feel. No salt means the playdough won’t dry out my kids hands. As the kids play the glitter will get mixed in to create fun shimmer playdough. If you want your moisturizing playdough to have a shelf life of a few weeks, add a preservative at 1% such as Optiphen ND meant for water-based products.

Just in time for spring break, I’m also excited to tell you about the DVD release of THE SWAN PRINCESS: ROYALLY UNDERCOVER from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Many of us moms grew up watching the Swan Princess and wondering how Odette would escape her fate transformed into a swan. I bet you also wanted to try some cucumber sandwiches and peppermint tea from The Swan Princess and the Secret of the Castle movie.

The Swan Princess Saga Continues with Princess Alise

Now kids can continue to enjoy the fun with Odette’s adopted daughter Princess Alise in an all-new feature length movie! Get ready to go on a secret undercover detective adventure when THE SWAN PRINCESS: ROYALLY UNDERCOVER arrives for the first time on DVD March 28 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The newest installment of the beloved animated franchise follows the enchanting tale of young Princess Alise and her friends as they embark on a new adventure where they solve a royal mystery using their detective skills and spy gadgets. Featuring fan-favorite characters and all new faces, this next installment is the perfect fit for a new generation of Swan Princess fans, as well as nostalgic fans of the franchise. It runs approximately 79 minutes and is rated G.

After mysterious visitors arrive in the Kingdom, Princess Alise, Lucas and their friends go undercover on a secret spy adventure to see if they can be trusted. They will need all of their superior detective skills as well as some super cool gadgets to solve the royal mystery and save the Kingdom.

DVD extras include “The X Factor” star Macy Kate in the studio as she records the theme song for THE SWAN PRINCESS: ROYALLY UNDERCOVER, “Born to Be Me.” Macy Kate also sang the theme song in the previous installment, THE SWAN PRINCESS: PRINCESS TOMORROW, PIRATE TODAY, which was titled “I’ll Be Your Star.”

Themed Discovery Boxes for Sensory Playtime - Mommy Scene Spring Break Activities

Themed Discovery Boxes

My kids LOVE sensory boxes. I often throw them together with random jewels, beads, sensory mediums, blocks, characters, and more! Sometimes these preschool sensory boxes can take 30 minutes to assemble, and I’m pulling toys from all different areas of the house. How cool would it be to have a sensory box pre-assembled and ready for play? Revelae Kids themed sensory boxes come in a clear storage box with a removable lid. Each of these themed play boxes include a sensory medium such as moldable play sand, water beads, or beans! Hidden within the sensory medium are all kinds of tiny treasures; sparkly jewels, colorful beads, rocks, shells, and cute little accents. Each box has a theme such as Dinosaur World complete with dinos and mini palm trees, or Ocean Exploration with a variety of fish, ocean plans, and squishy non-toxic blue water beads. Discovery Boxes are a child’s dream come true and moms can pull them out and easily clean up without the hassle of assembling an exciting sensory bin for imaginative play.

Make Your Own Sensory Bin

To make a sensory bin, you just need the following items!

Sensory Medium: Real sand, kinetic sand, beans, split peas, pom poms, and water beads all make great kid-friendly sensory mediums to hide tiny treasures.

Fun Accents: Colorful beads, jewels, tiny toys, ribbon, crystals, marbles, lego blocks, acrylic shapes, and small foam shapes are all fun things to collect, bury, and discover in a kids’ sensory bin.

Characters: Small animals, dolls, characters, and miniature creatures are must-haves to set up pretend scenarios in a themed sensory bin for preschoolers. Your kids can reenact the prehistoric world or create a Frozen kingdom with Elsa and Anna within their imaginative sensory bin.

Decorative Extras: Sticks, leaves, tiny trees, small plants, and rocks are fun accents to create a tiny world for your sensory box characters and creatures.

Already have your own box but need some ideas? Check out Revelae Kids’ themed Discovery Box Kits that come with everything you need to create your own sensory box for kids!

Plan a Themed Imaginative Play Day

My girls had so much fun pretending to be mermaids, exploring a secret ocean castle, and enjoying a mermaid snack! We enjoyed a whole mermaid-themed day complete with costumes and “swimming” around the house. If your kids aren’t that into dress up, tie on some blanket “Superhero Capes” and let your kids fly around the house and yard.

Turn Spring Cleaning into a Game

Teach your kids how to clean up for spring by organizing their rooms, donating unwanted toys to other kids, and weeding through old clothing sizes to make room for new warm weather fashions. Kids will benefit from learning how to clean and de-clutter from a young age, especially if a mom sets the example and shows them how to organize.

I love the variety of ideas here. Even a movie! I was expecting a long list of complicated crafts, LOL. One or two crafts is great but a movie is a good activity too once in awhile 🙂
