Trends come and go but some brands are timeless. I loved playing with American Girl dolls as a child and my girls love playing with them now. Getting out all my old AG outfits and accessories brings back the fun memories I made as a child. American Girl has changed a lot over the years but their characters remain classics, with both modern and historical stories that girls can relate to and learn from.
One of my favorite American Girl characters is Felicity Merriman and I was super bummed when they archived this classic character. American Girl re-released the Felicity doll and story set as a 2017 BeForever character, complete with her own historical outfits and accessories that girls love. Felicity Merriman’s story is based in colonial Williamsburg in 1774. Although a much simpler time with much less technology, America was on the brink of the Revolutionary War (1775 to 1783) and in the midst of political upheaval.
Felicity is a tomboyish and adventurous girl for her age in her era and is annoyed by her lack of freedom and the ladylike manner expected of her. Felicity believes in fighting for what she wants and sometimes wavers between being brave and foolish in her actions. Her story brings to life a past wartime historical era that girls can connect with. I think it’s great for kids to learn about history in memorable ways that help them related to events from the past.
The Felicity American Girl doll comes with a darling blue dress that is gathered in the back and accented on the front with a contrasting yellow panel. Embroidery was a popular way of decorating dresses in colonial Williamsburg, often coordinating bright jewel colors and bold patterns.
I love the look of this 1774 style dress and unique details like the bustle in the back and colorful floral pattern. Felicity also comes with simple leather buckle shoes and white socks.
American Girl Felicity’s accessories kit, sold separately, includes a straw hat, white bonnet and shawl, and her coral bead necklace.
American Girl also introduced modern character Z Yang on April 27. “Z” (short for Suzie) is Korean American and a stop-motion vlogger character, representing more diverse backgrounds and creative interests girls have today.
Z Yang is being brought to life for fans who have come to know and love her as the star of American Girl’s immensely popular web series, Z’s Crew. She lives in Seattle and loves staying connected with friends and sharing a good story through her stop motion videos.
Other new American Girl characters include band mates Tenney and Logan and the 2017 American Girl of the Year Gabriela McBride.
