Practical Basics for New Dads

As a busy dad, I am always looking for the next thing to make my life with kids just a little bit easier and simpler. I’ve discovered some simple solutions to help keep your life, car, and stroller a bit more organized so you can easily find the essentials when you need them. Here are my top picks for dads on the go with kids in tow.

DadGear Messenger Bag

The DadGear Messenger Bag is a great “manly” diaper bag which comes in more than 30 styles! You never know when your child’s diaper needs changing, or perhaps just their clothes, but an included handy changing pad keeps you covered (or your kid) anytime anywhere. Can’t find a changing table and have to use the bathroom counter or carpeted floor? Boom, you have a portable pad to put down. It’s slightly cushy and waterproof thanks to the nylon fabric. Do you need to store powders, creams, bottles, and other accessories you didn’t know existed before you had a kid? Me too. The two bottle pockets, two everything-pockets, and two zippered pockets offer plenty of storage.

I know what you’re thinking. Surely there can’t be enough room for diapering essentials AND formula and snacks too. Wrong you are sir. There certainly IS room for these things. Personally, I place a few generous doses of formula in a small plastic container to bring along with a spare bottle or three, and I and the wee-est one are good to go. The main compartment that fits diapers and everything else you might want to bring is generously sized. I usually stuff in 3-5 diapers per child along with a change of clothes for each child (potty training – *groan*) and I still have room to spare.

Usually I only bring along the essentials and “just-in-case” items, but this bag not only fits a lot, it is sturdy and flexible, so over stuffing is never an issue. The combination of Velcro and large buckles on the flap will hold in everything except the smell of that filthy diaper from two days ago that I forgot to toss. There are zipper pockets on the sides, on the front, along the back, and the front even has an opening for dispensing wipes!

One of the central features of the bag is the stretchy pocket on the front that holds wipes on a ready to reach basis — you can have the access to wipes facing out; reachable even without undoing buckles on the bag if you are in a tight spot.

The front pocket makes it easy to reach wipes even the backseat of the car while in the parking lot when your kid says they have sticky hands from the three suckers they pilfered from the bank, which turned their mouth completely blue. And whenever you want to do a quick diaper change without setting the bag down, you can grab a diaper and a wipe quicker than that child can crawl away, all without removing the DadGear Messenger Style Diaper Bag from your shoulder. This DadGear Messenger Bag makes a perfect Father’s Day gift too!

DadGear Backpack Diaper Bag

If a messenger bag isn’t quite your style, you are sure to love this DadGear Backpack Diaper Bag. This “incognito” diaper bag has all the function and practicality a great diaper bag should.

I use this backpack for everything; my wallet, phone, and keys fit nicely into the outer pocket which has organizing mesh pockets too! Guys will feel totally comfortable wearing this diaper bag that also offers easy access to diapers, wipes, and baby bottles.

The big clam shell pocket is an excellent design and it provides plenty of storage while still allowing you to find baby items quickly without shuffling everything around. I imagine with all the space this backpack would be great for traveling and small enough for an airplane carry-on.
