Banana Chocolate Chip Petit Fours are pretty much just as easy as making muffins, with an adorable twist! These tasty treats are bite-sized, perfect for kids & adults alike. They are also portable, easy cakes to take to a party.
What is a petit four, you ask? They are small desserts or appetizers. Petit four is French for “small oven”. These tasty treats have traditionally been made in little ovens.
Use this easy recipe to make banana bread as the “cake” for your petit fours!
- 2-3 very ripe bananas, peeled
- 1 cup of sugar or less
- 1 egg beaten
- 1/3 cup cooking oil
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- Pinch of salt
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 6 oz chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, mash and beat the bananas until smooth. Add the sugar, egg, cooking oil, and vanilla extract and mix well. Combine the baking soda, salt, and flour together. Add dry ingredients to the banana mixture 1/2 cup at a time and mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips. Pour into a greased cake pan.
Bake for 50 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
Your kids will have fun helping too! Mine love to add some of the dry ingredients or stir the batter. There may be a bit more of a mess on your counter with their help, but kids love to participate and learn! After putting the batter in the oven, I turn the oven light on so my daughter can watch what is happening inside.
Once ready, a tooth pick inserted into the center of the banana bread should come out clean. The bread should cool for a few minutes before being turned out onto a cooling rack. Cut the banana bread into 1 inch by 1 inch squares, allowing them to fully cool before coating each cube with icing.
Make homemade frosting glaze by combining 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, and 1 tsp. melted butter. Add a spoonful of milk at a time until the glaze reaches a pourable consistency. Mix in more spoonfuls of powdered sugar to thicken if needed.
Arrange cubed chocolate chip banana bread on a cooling rack with a baking sheet underneath. This will create the base to pour icing over your banana bread petit fours.
Pour the icing over the cake squares, covering the top and sides. Place the petit fours in the freezer for a few minutes, in between icing coats to harden each layer. Scrape the icing off the cookie sheet below, removing any crumbs and re-pour the icing over the petite fours, repeating until each petit four is completely coated.
Decorate each petit four with more homemade icing. Add additional powdered sugar to thicken the icing for decorating and food coloring if desired. Frost each cake with a icing tube and screw-on tip. Your kids will have fun participating in decorating too.
Decorate the petit fours with different patterns, colors, and even accents. Finish with fun designs like rosettes, polka dots, criss-crossed lines and squiggles. Here we used sugar-based decorating pearls as a finishing accent.
These would be a perfect crowd-pleaser for a dress up tea party, potluck, birthday party, or brunch. They pair wonderfully with coffee or tea, and may even become a conversation piece!
