Back to School Basics for Kids

by Katie Wallace | Updated: September 24, 2018

What’s the first thing you do to get ready for going back to school? We stock up on new school supplies! After that, it’s important to make sure kids have the necessary school clothes, comfy shoes for walking and playing sports, and energizing healthy snacks. These back to school basics are helpful to check off your list!

Colorful School Supplies

School is much more fun if your notebook has mermaids on it! My girls loved picking out new school supplies this year. Our kids list of back to school basics included a pencil pouch, notebook, binder, new pencils, erasers, scissor and glue.

Most schools provide a list of school supplies so you can take your child shopping and pick up all their basic school needs. But don’t wait too long to shop for school supplies! We stocked up on most of our school supplies early this year and good thing too; many stores were sold out towards the end of August.

Comfy Kids Shoes

My kids often need new shoes at the end of summer. Their flip flops are worn out and the weather is getting colder. My kids also usually grow a bit over the summer. pediped kids shoes is a great go-to brand with more than 130 trendy styles for boys and girls. pediped shoes are great quality and provide comfortable support for energetic little kids who want to run, play soccer, do gymnastics and more! The best part is, pediped shoes withstand a lot of wear and if they get really dirty you can throw them in the washing machine for cleaning. My little guy is very active and needs quality shoes that protect his feet.

Exceptional quality, unsurpassed comfort, and distinctive styling have made pediped the fastest growing children’s footwear brand in the United States. The award-winning footwear is available in EU sizes 17 to 38 (US newborn to 6 Youth).

pediped kids shoes also make great hand-me-downs because they last so long. My older daughter has passed on several pairs of pediped shoes to her sister and the shoes still fit and look great. My younger daughter loves running around outside, going to gymnastics and hiking with our family on our local neighborhood trails. She’s an eager adventurer and she always picks out glittery shoes and accessories. pediped shoes offer the best of both; darling shimmery shoes that protect her feet at the park, on the playground, in the woods and everywhere else!

Organized Homework Corner

Our family does homeschool so I designed a cozy school corner in our basement. Even if kids go to school during the day, moms can create an organized homework corner, complete with desk space, extra pencils and writing paper. Kids will be more productive if their spot to do homework is free of distractions. A homework corner also helps keep schoolwork off the dining room table!

Organized Homeschool corner to do homework

I decorated our homeschool corner with  some vintage looking metal caddies, a metal map of the United States and a colorful DIY mini felt pennant banner. I needed some extra light in that corner of our basement so I added a modern puzzle lamp pendant. This lamp came in pieces that I had to arrange into a globe pendant light, just like a puzzle! The end result is a whimsical lighting accent that provides some extra light for our homeschool corner.

I also added a My Mighty Magnet photo cable to display the kids photos. This cute photo display wire uses strong magnets to show off photos that I can easily swap out seasonally or as my kids grow older. Each magnet is decorated with a clear rhinestone (other styles are available too). If you have young kiddos, it can be helpful to put this photo display cable up high so kids can’t access the magnets or rearrange the photos.

Healthy Kids Snacks

My kids love having an afternoon snack. I try to pick snack options that won’t ruin their appetite for dinner. Fresh apple slices, peanut butter crackers, string cheese and Veggie Straws are all fairly healthy snack options kids can enjoy after school.

Back to School Snacks - Squeaky Pops chickpea chips

Popped chickpea chips are another great healthy snack. Squeaky Pops are packed with real ingredients, nothing artificial and less than 100 calories; a yummy snack or addition to a healthy lunch. Squeaky Pops chickpea chips even come in two flavors, cheddar cheese and apple cinnamon! I love finding creative ways to encourage my kids to eat healthier, even while snacking!

How do you make the back to school routine go smoothly for your family? My kids enjoy getting new supplies for the school season and they love learning when I find creative ways to make school fun!

💡 Essential tips for traveling with our 4 kids! 💡 Essential tips for traveling with our 4 kids!

🧳 Pack light with items that do more

We bring clothes that mix and match, quick-dry layers, fold-flat totes, and activities that encourage creativity. Think art supplies and travel board games. The less we carry, the more we can explore.

🥪 Eat often and try new flavors
We use snack stops and meals to experience local culture. Bakeries, fruit stands, and small cafés become our favorite spots.

🏞️ Choose simple adventures over packed days
We go on kid-friendly hikes, stop at playgrounds, and tour cultural centers. We visit great houses, historic workhouses, and local museums.

📱 Use screens sparingly
Ideally our kids only use screens on travel days, and with a time limit. Shows and multi-player games can help turn dull afternoons into family fun!

🔦 Encourage curiosity
We explore as much as we can with our four kids, shopping at markets, using public transportation, and visiting immersive attractions. We find many free activities, and budget for must-see destinations.

Our kids are our biggest fans 🙌🎬 Making YouT Our kids are our biggest fans 🙌🎬
Making YouTube videos of our family adventures has been such a great way to share and save our family memories. We watch our vids all the time, which take us right back to the special moments. Our audience is growing slowly, but it’s really not about that at all!

Because we travel with our kids, our children are brave and adventurous — willing to try new things and eager to problem solve. Adventurous kids are resourceful kids!

We visited the Trevi Fountain in Rome during Easte We visited the Trevi Fountain in Rome during Easter weekend. ⛲️✨ Even though the streets of Rome were packed, this site had crowd control security, who only let a few people down in front of the fountain at a time.

We stood in line for 10 minutes, and were given unrushed time to take photos and video clips in front of this iconic landmark. 📸 We have no idea whether this is normal, but it was such a special highlight in Rome!

Have you been to the Trevi Fountain? What was your experience with the crowds?
