Visiting Stonehenge with Kids, UK

When was the last time you thought about Stonehenge? Our family had the opportunity to visit this ancient stone circle near Wiltshire, England, UK. The massive stones are impressive, and the mystery behind them intriguing. Stonehenge was constructed by ancient people for reasons that can only be guessed. Here are the highlights of our visit to Stonehenge with kids.

Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site and has been legally protected since 1882. Visitors from all over the world can see this wonder in its preserved state. Likely built in stages from 3100 BC to 1600 BC, it’s an amazing Neolithic stone circle. Evidently, no one specifically knows who built Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain or what they used it for. The placement of stones at Stonehenge may suggest it tracks the sun’s movements.

Things to Know about Visiting Stonehenge with Kids

Stonehenge is a great family destination. Our family visited Stonehenge in Fall 2022, during our first trip to the United Kingdom. The monument is right off the highway on Salisbury Plain in the UK. We purchased tickets at the visitor’s center and boarded a shuttle which took us closer to the monument. Once off the shuttle, we took a lengthy yet leisurely walk along a path to Stonehenge itself.

Here’s a few things to know about visiting Stonehenge.

You can’t get close – Presumably to protect the monument, visitors must stay on the walking path while viewing Stonehenge. This also allows you to take photos in front of Stonehenge, without lots of people in the background. You can see the full circle of Stonehenge from the walking path, although the size of the stones is a bit diminished from that distance.

It may be windy – During our visit, it was VERY windy on the surrounding plain. Because we wore jackets and good walking shoes, we were able to fully enjoy the experience visiting Stonehenge.

Pictures make great memories – We took several family photos and landscape photos of Stonehenge. Photos are great reminders we were actually there! Alternately, I put away my phone and just soaked up the experience of seeing Stonehenge. The huge stones arranged in a strategic circle must have taken many people and impressive mechanical leverage to move.

Field Trip to Stonehenge, UK

In my opinion, Stonehenge is truly a wonder to see in person. Visiting Stonehenge with kids is a great homeschool and worldschool field trip. Would you want to visit this prehistoric stone circle?
