Scented Mint Playdough for Kids

by Katie Wallace | Updated: June 12, 2026

Making homemade playdough is a great afternoon activity for kids. It’s perfect for cold or rainy days, because playdough can entertain kids for hours. This DIY scented mint playdough uses my best homemade playdough recipe, with added mint extract.

To make mint playdough, you will need a few simple ingredients, such as water, vegetable oil, salt, cream of tarter, flour, and (optional) food coloring and fragrance.

Best Homemade Playdough Recipe

I typically use my best homemade playdough recipe to make all sorts of playdough colors!

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • green gel food coloring
  • mint extract or essential oil

Begin by combining the water, salt, cream of tarter, and oil in a medium sauce pan. Heat these ingredients until the mixture is fully dissolved.

Once the salt is dissolved into the water, give the mixture a stir and add a few drops of food coloring and (optional) fragrance. Adding the color at this liquid stage is the easiest way to fully mix the food coloring into your homemade playdough. If you wait until the dough stage, you will have to knead the food coloring in.

Next, slowly mix in the 2 cups of flour. The mixture will start out gooey at first, and thicken as the flour cooks. Once the playdough becomes doughy and less sticky, remove the pan from the heat. Dump the playdough out onto a piece of parchment paper to cool. Caution! The playdough will be very hot!

Sensory Mint Playdough

This homemade playdough is soft, brightly colored, and minty fresh! I used 2 drops of green gel food coloring and 2 capfuls of mint extract. My kids can make all sorts of creations by rolling it out, cutting the playdough with cookie cutters, and balling it up.

I especially like homemade playdough because it’s softer and more malleable than store-bought playdough. Additionally, you can make this playdough in large quantities. I’ve made playdough for birthday parties and playdates with friends.

If your kids enjoy playing with playdough, this minty green sensory dough is definitely worth trying out!

Kids can knead it, roll it out, ball it up, and cut playdough into pieces to practice their motor skills. Alternately, use cookie cutters and arrange the playdough in silicone cupcake liners to practice making treats. Best of all, when you make your own playdough, you can mix up any color or even make rainbow glitter playdough. Kids can help choose the colors and watch the cooking process (from a safe distance from the stove). Happy playdough making!

🌟Our kids quickly discovered that the world is big 🌟Our kids quickly discovered that the world is bigger than their own yard, town, or state.

Every new adventure teaches them they can do hard things!

Travel also teaches kids flexibility, resilience, and resourcefulness in real life.

Already, our kids can confidently order lunch in another language, navigate a new city, and start planning our next adventure themselves. 🌍

We’ve experienced that travel isn’t just about seeing new places. It’s about raising curious, confident kids who are ready for the world!

Turns out iPhones and saltwater don’t mix. 💦 A qui Turns out iPhones and saltwater don’t mix. 💦 A quick dip (a splash really) completely destroyed my phone’s screen and any media that wasn’t backed up to iCloud.

Not a huge deal though. 😌 I was without a phone for a week and I realized it was refreshing. So when I got a new iPhone $1000 later, I made some big changes. I didn’t reinstall half my apps. No Signal or Facebook. I continue to not have X, Snapchat, or TikTok. Because I’m so busy with family life and being a mom (and pregnant), these apps are just so distracting and overstimulating for me.

Good news! I have a working phone and you can find me on Instagram, text on iMessage, and occasionally see photos on Facebook when I post from my computer.

💬 Is anyone else completely overstimulated by all the distracting apps?? 😄🤯

So magical! This was such a fun stop during our fa So magical! This was such a fun stop during our family adventures in Scotland! ⚡🍺

The Elephant House is well known as one of the cafés where J. K. Rowling spent time writing portions of the Harry Potter series. With views overlooking Edinburgh and a cozy atmosphere, it’s easy to see why this spot inspired so much creativity.

Whether you’re a Harry Potter fan or simply enjoy discovering unique places, it’s a memorable stop while exploring Edinburgh. And yes… the Butterbeer made the experience even more fun! ✨

⚡ If you could visit one Harry Potter filming location or inspiration in the UK, which one would you choose?
