What announces a party like a pennant banner? This DIY felt pennant banner is easy to make, and you can match the colors to any party theme. When the party is over, hang this cheerful pop of color in a bedroom or playroom. I made my pennant banner in under an hour with a few simple craft supplies. Here is how you can make one too!
Supplies You Will Need
- colored felt
- ribbon
- a piece of cardboard for the template
- scissors
- hot glue gun
- measuring tape
Step 1: Make a Cardboard Template
First, cut a piece of cardboard into a triangle. This is your template. You will use it to cut every felt flag the same size. A uniform template keeps all your flags matching.
Step 2: Cut the Felt Flags
Place the cardboard template on the felt. Then cut around it. You can also trace the template first and cut along the lines. To save time, stack several pieces of felt and cut a few flags at once.
Cut out about 20 flags for a standard banner. Cut more if you want a longer one, and mix the colors any way you like. You can make a repeating pattern or an eclectic rainbow.
Step 3: Lay Out Your Design
Before you glue anything, lay the flags out along the ribbon. This lets you plan the colors. I spaced my felt flags evenly using a ruler. Arranging them first makes the final banner look balanced.
Step 4: Glue the Flags to the Ribbon
Now it is time to glue. Squeeze a line of hot glue along the top edge of each flag. Then lay the ribbon onto the glue and press gently. Keep the ribbon flat so it does not twist. Work one flag at a time until they are all attached.
Be careful, a hot glue gun is hot! An adult should handle the gluing for younger kids.
Step 5: Add Hanging Loops
Finally, make a loop at each end of the ribbon. These loops make the banner easy to hang. Your DIY felt pennant banner is done!
Decorate Indoors or Outdoors
A felt pennant banner works anywhere. I have hung ours in the dining room for birthday parties using push pins. I have also strung it across our patio for an end-of-summer barbecue. The bright flags liven up any space!
