Interactive Yard Activities for Kids

by Katie Wallace | Updated: August 28, 2018

My kids love doing interactive outdoor activities. Regardless of season or weather, my kids enjoy running around the yard or going on a short family hike. Fresh air and exercise is important for kids to develop healthy habits and discover new interests. These interactive yard activities for kids are easy to pull out, set up or mix up.

Make DIY Sidewalk Chalk

My kids love mixing up DIY sidewalk chalk and painting designs on our front walkway. All you need is cornstarch, water and food coloring to make homemade sidewalk chalk. You can find our full DIY sidewalk chalk instructions here.

Roll Around in the Yard

We have a big yard but sometimes my kids have trouble staying busy in our yard. Interesting yard activities like an inflatable Roller Wheel are easy to set up and my kids enjoy pushing each other around inside the wheel. The circular design allows kids to crawl inside it as they roll around the yard. My daughter is 6 years old and she easily fits inside this wheel. Once you inflate it with the foot pump it comes with, the wheel has colorful balls that bounce around inside as the wheel turns over the grass. The roller wheel is also a fun water toy to use in a swimming pool.

Stomp Rocket and Roller Wheel Kids Activities

Launch Air-Powered Rockets

A Stomp Rocket is a great yard toy for toddlers and kids. My little girl quickly figured out how to place the foam rocket on the launch stand and stomp on the launch pad to make the rocket fly!

This activity is especially fun because kids can launch the rockets and then run after them to retrieve them over and over again. Kids can play with a Stomp Rocket alone or with friends, getting exercise and practicing their coordination. Even my 2-year-old little boy can launch a Stomp Rocket into the air.

Stomp Rocket Stunt Planes kids activity

This set of Stomp Rocket Stunt Planes comes with a stand that can be adjusted to fly planes at various angles. It’s 100% kid-powered — just run, jump and stomp!

Put On a Talent Show

My girls love performing in impromptu singing and dancing shows. This VTech Kidi Star Karaoke Machine encourages kids to show off their skills and host their own talent show! This karaoke machine is super portable for indoor or outdoor performances. My girls can sing along with the included 8 original songs or connect a mobile phone to use their own playlist of tunes. Kids can even change their voice with 5 different voice effects and add fun sound effects to their performance such as clapping and audience laughter. The VTech karaoke machine has a built-in disco light you can twist 180 degrees to create a bright and colorful light show!

Childhood is such a short and memorable time of life. I try to give my kids structure during the day as well as opportunities to learn, create and explore new things!
