Leaf Painting Creative Kids Art Project

Kids Activities  /  | Updated: June 23, 2026

There’s something magical about the vibrant colors and intricate shapes of autumn leaves. Leaf painting is an enjoyable and easy way to transform leaves into art and bring the outdoors inside. In this post, we’ll explore different techniques for painting leaves. Grab some leaves, your favorite acrylic paints, and let’s get started on this nature-inspired art project!

Our first leaf painting art project involves decorating maple leaves with white painted designs. Let the pretty colors of fall inspire you to design seasonal art! This craft is a fun way to use real leaves as a canvas to paint whimsical designs. Furthermore, kids and adults will enjoy the experience of painting on leaves. To display your painted leaves, you could arrange them to create a fall table centerpiece, or use one to decorate each place setting. Alternately, you could tie each leaf to a piece of string to create a fall leaf garland.

Leaf painting designs can be elaborate or simple. White dabs of paint show up in sharp contrast to the bright fall colors of fallen leaves.

White dots and short brush strokes create different designs on each leaf.

If you try this creative kids activity, I recommend laying down a piece of parchment paper or cardstock for kids to paint on. This will create a workspace and reduce the painting mess. Furthermore, small brushes work best for painting tiny dots and dashes. Kids can practice creating detailed designs by painting on real leaves, using white craft paint.

Colorful Leaf Painting

For our next leaf painting technique, my kids painted colored acrylic paint on leaves they gathered from our yard. These painted leaves turned out vibrant and shimmery, with some added glitter.

Materials:

  • paint brush
  • craft paint
  • assortment of fallen leaves (dry but not crispy)
  • glitter

To paint real leaves with craft paint, first clean off the leaves to remove dirt. Place each leaf on a sheet of parchment paper. Once prepared, paint each leaf with acrylic paint to transform them into beautiful fall art. Kids can design patterns or paint each leaf a solid color. We even accent our painted leaves with glitter!

Allow the painted leaves to fully dry before handling them. These painted leaves are so pretty to use as festive fall home decor!

Benefits of Kids Painting Projects

When kids practice painting, they also practice a variety of skills. Kids can learn find motor skills by holding a paint brush and creating small designs. Additionally, they can learn which paint colors go well together. Last but not least, any paint project is a great opportunity for kids to learn about color mixing, painting techniques, and clean up afterwards.
