Do you enjoy seeing unique aquatic creatures up close? The Vancouver Aquarium in Canada doesn’t disappoint. Tucked inside Stanley Park in the heart of Vancouver, it’s packed with things to see and hands-on activities for kids. Our family guide to visiting the Vancouver Aquarium with kids includes our favorite exhibits and a few helpful tips.

Under the Sea Viewing Windows
At the Vancouver Aquarium, the colorful ocean displays were an instant hit with our girls. They especially loved the graceful jellyfish drifting through their tanks and the bright tropical fish darting around the viewing windows. We watched clownfish tuck into coral and pink sea anemones. We also viewed the Pacific Canada displays showcasing the marine life of the local British Columbia coast. This aquarium allows families with kids to explore, learn something new, and have fun doing it!

Hands-On Activities for Kids
One of our kids’ favorite exhibits was the interactive area, where they could see marine life up close and learn through play. The aquarium’s children’s zone, Clownfish Cove, is designed just for younger visitors. The activities let little ones touch, pretend, and discover at their own pace. It is the perfect spot to let energetic kids learn a little bit about ocean science.

A Focus on Rescue and Conservation
A good thing to know before you visit is the Vancouver Aquarium no longer keeps whales and dolphins on display. Since 2018, it has shifted its focus to marine research, rescue, and conservation. So while you can’t see beluga or dolphin shows anymore, you will find rescued sea otters, sea lions, and other animals cared for by the aquarium’s rescue program. It was meaningful for our family to learn how the aquarium helps injured and orphaned animals.
Sea Otters, Penguins, and More
The aquarium is home to more than 70,000 animals across dozens of exhibits, so there’s a lot to see! We enjoyed viewing the playful rescued sea otters, the African penguins, and larger marine mammals such as sea lions. If you visit, take your time and let kids linger at the exhibits that capture their attention.
Rainforest Reptiles and Birds
Beyond the ocean tanks, the aquarium’s Amazon rainforest gallery is a fun change of scenery. Here we saw reptiles, snakes, and tropical birds living in lush, replicated natural habitats. It is a warm, green world tucked inside the aquarium, and a nice contrast to all the underwater exhibits.
Experience the 4D Theatre
Be sure to check the schedule for the 4D Experience Theatre, which is included with admission. It pairs an ocean film with sensory effects like wind, mist, scents, and vibration. Our kids thought the show we saw was thrilling! The 4D theater is a fun way to rest your feet for a few minutes in the middle of your visit.
