What’s the magical drink often mentioned in the Harry Potter series? Butter beer of course! If you like Harry Potter, you likely have imagined how this fizzy drink would taste. Because our family has visited the Harry Potter WB Studio in London, we’ve tasted the studio’s version of butter beer ourselves. Here’s a simple recipe for homemade butter beer using three ingredients! Try making this yummy non-alcoholic drink for yourselves!
Making butter beer is pretty straight forward. I’ve included an extra ingredient just in case you make your butter beer too sweet.
Homemade Butter Beer
Ingredients:
- cream soda
- butterscotch topping
- whipped cream
- sparkling water (optional)
- butter extract (optional)
Individual Serving
To make a serving of butter beer, first empty a can of cream soda into a glass. We used glass mugs with handles, which look cool and are easy for kids to hold. Next, mix in a spoonful of butterscotch topping, stirring until dissolved. Taste test to achieve desired sweetness. Top with whipped cream and butterscotch topping drizzle.
Pitcher of Butter Beer
To make a pitcher of butter beer which serves 3-4 people, pour 3 cans of cream soda into a pitcher. Follow by stirring in several spoonfuls of butterscotch topping until dissolved. Pour the butter beer into glasses and top each with whipped cream and butterscotch topping drizzle.
Whipped Topping
For the whipped topping, I’ve used store bought whipped cream in a pressurized can. Alternatively, I made homemade whipped cream using heavy cream, 1 tbsp. sugar, and a whipped cream dispenser. These dispensers use nitrous oxide (n20) chargers to make homemade whipped cream on demand. Both versions of whipped cream work for making homemade butter beer.
Sparkling Water (optional)
If your homemade butter beer is too sweet, you can add a splash of sparkling water to even out the flavor. Adding extra liquid such as Pellegrino maintains the drink’s bubbles while lightening the flavor of your homemade butter beer.
Butter Extract (optional)
I saw another suggestion to add a few drops of butter extract to homemade butter beer. This sounds interesting and possibly would add a richer buttery flavor to this wizarding world drink. I have not tried this yet.
Overall, homemade butter beer is a tasty drink to enjoy, and a creative drink to try making! Often in the fall, our family will watch some of the Harry Potter movies, which is a perfect occasion to make butter beer! Additionally, butter beer could be a fun treat to enjoy close to Halloween.
