Fun Spring Kids Activities to Try at Home

by Katie Wallace | Updated: March 26, 2025

Happy Spring! Spring break is the perfect time to enjoy extra activities with your kids. If you’re wondering how to keep them entertained during time off school, simple hands-on projects are always a hit. This week we made homemade playdough, explored themed sensory bins, decorated sugar cookies, enjoyed healthy yogurt pops, and even tried a fun science experiment! Here are some of our favorite spring-inspired kids activities.

Easter egg hunt family activity

Outdoor Spring Egg Hunt Ideas for Kids

Egg hunts don’t have to be just for Easter. Celebrate the season with an outdoor egg hunt and enjoy the fresh spring weather. Instead of candy, fill plastic eggs with small toys, trinkets, or even notes for special activities. Kids will love the thrill of the hunt and the surprise of what they’ll discover.

Homemade Bunny Sugar Cookies for Spring

We kicked off spring with bunny and egg-shaped sugar cookies decorated in bright icing. My girls enjoyed mixing the dough and designing their own cookies. The finished treats were almost too cute to eat, but we happily enjoyed this springtime snack.

Baking Tips! These cookie baking and decorating tips can help you make beautiful cookies for any party or special event!

  • Mix up your favorite sugar cookie recipe. Cut the cookie shapes about 1/4 inch thick so they hold their shape.
  • Bake just until set and take them out before they brown, then let them rest briefly on the sheet before transferring to a cooling rack.

Sugar Cookie Icing

  • For decorating icing, mix 1 tbsp. butter, 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tbsp. milk, and 1 tsp. vanilla. Add a bit more milk or powered sugar if needed and mix until smooth.
  • Don’t make the icing too thick or it won’t spread smoothly.
  • Use sandwich bags with a tiny corner cut off as quick piping bags for different icing colors.
  • Decorate and enjoy your pretty treats!

Custom sugar cookies are a sweet way to celebrate spring and make adorable treats for a tea party or playdate.

How to Make Glitter Playdough for Kids

Playdough is always a favorite, and adding glitter makes it extra fun. We made sparkly playdough eggs just in time for Easter. This version skips the salt, which means it’s gentle on little hands but still stretches beautifully. The conditioner adds a nice scent and soft texture, while the glitter creates shimmering dough that kids love.

Glitter Playdough Recipe

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup hair conditioner
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • Food coloring
  • Glitter

Instructions

In a medium pot, whisk together all ingredients except coloring and glitter.

Cook over medium heat, stirring until it thickens and pulls away from the sides.

Remove from heat and let cool.

Divide into portions and knead in food coloring.

Roll each ball in glitter and enjoy!

This playdough is soft, stretchy, and full of sparkle. It’s perfect for imaginative play and seasonal fun.

Static Electricity Science Experiment for Kids

Science is all around us, and you don’t need a fancy lab to explore it with your kids. With just a few everyday items, you can create static electricity and use it to do fun, hands-on experiments. From separating salt and pepper to bending water or even moving bubbles, these simple static electricity activities are a great way to spark curiosity. Alternately, add excitement to homeschool lessons, or enjoy an after-school science adventure.

DIY Themed Sensory Bin Ideas

Sensory bins are a favorite in our home and a wonderful way to encourage discovery through play. You can fill a bin with just a few simple materials and create endless variations.

Base material: Try play sand, kinetic sand, beans, split peas, pom poms, or water beads.

Accents: Add beads, jewels, tiny toys, ribbons, crystals, marbles, LEGO pieces, or foam shapes (watch for choking hazards with toddlers).

Characters: Include animals, dolls, or figurines for pretend play. Build a prehistoric world, a fairy garden, or even a Frozen kingdom.

Decorative extras: Sticks, leaves, small plants, and rocks help set the scene and inspire creativity.

For an easy start, themed kits are also available with everything you need to put together a discovery box.

Healthy Yogurt Ice Pops Recipe

For a refreshing spring snack, we made yogurt ice pops. Simply mix your kidsโ€™ favorite yogurt with fresh fruit, pour into molds, and freeze. Theyโ€™re quick to prepare, fun for kids to help with, and make a healthy treat for warm afternoons.

โœจ With activities like baking, science, sensory play, and outdoor fun, spring break can be full of creative family memories.

I love the variety of ideas here. Even a movie! I was expecting a long list of complicated crafts, LOL. One or two crafts is great but a movie is a good activity too once in awhile ๐Ÿ™‚

Airbnb makes traveling with kids so flexible! But Airbnb makes traveling with kids so flexible! But weโ€™ve had to buy some household essentials for our stays. We usually bring our own:

trash bags, cleaning supplies, laundry soap & stain remover, sponges & dish brushes, extra toilet paper, sometimes cute decor! ๐Ÿ˜†

The reason for this is that Airbnbs are usually not stocked with household supplies. I have my own go-to to favorite products for wiping countertops and doing laundry.

Additionally, when we travel, we often stay in 5 to 10 Airbnbs, and itโ€™s nice to have our household essentials with us.

๐Ÿ“ Ripon Prison Museum - Step back into the earl ๐Ÿ“ Ripon Prison Museum - Step back into the early 1800s in Yorkshire, England, where crime came with serious consequences. Even children were punished with prison time for stealing food or property. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

We walked through cold cells and learned about the forced labor and bleak meals given to inmates. This glimpse into Victorian prison life was sobering, but such a powerful experience for our kids.
