Family Camping at Farragut State Park | Coeur d’Alene Activities

by Katie Wallace | Updated: January 20, 2026

Looking for summer activities that help your family slow down and reconnect? Camping at Farragut State Park is one of our favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors together while exploring North Idaho.

Our family loves camping because it is an affordable, flexible way to travel with kids. Days are filled naturally with excercise, fresh air, and shared experiences. Since we live in North Idaho, Farragut State Park camping trips near Coeur d’Alene have become a regular part of our summers.

With spacious campsites, miles of trails, and easy access to Lake Pend Oreille, family camping at Farragut State Park offers endless opportunities for kids to play and parents to relax. These are our favorite Farragut State Park camping activities to enjoy while staying at the park.

Riding Bikes Around the Campground and Trails

Bringing bikes is always at the top of our packing list when camping at Farragut State Park. Biking is one of the easiest and most-loved camping activities at Farragut State Park, especially for families with kids.

When staying in the campground, our kids enjoy riding bikes around the paved loops while we relax nearby. Farragut State Park also has bike paths and forest trails that are perfect for longer family rides together. It is an easy way to fill an afternoon and burn off energy without much planning.

Bikes are simple to transport using a vehicle rack, making this a low-effort, high-reward activity for family camping trips.

Playing Disc Golf at Farragut State Park

Disc golf is another favorite activity during family camping at Farragut State Park. Kids and adults can compete together while walking through the forested courses.

Players take turns throwing discs toward basket-style targets, following rules similar to traditional golf. Farragut State Park features several disc golf courses, including a shorter course that works well for kids and beginners.

This activity combines light hiking, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs, making it one of the most memorable Farragut State Park camping activities for families.

Going on Easy Family Hikes

Hiking is one of our favorite ways to explore while camping at Farragut State Park. We have been hiking with our kids since they were babies and we’ve gone on many North Idaho adventures. This park offers many trails suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Farragut State Park near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is known for its well-maintained trails, many of which lead to beautiful viewpoints overlooking Lake Pend Oreille. Some hikes are short and perfect for a quick outing, while others allow you to spend hours wandering through forested paths. Hiking and exploring the Farragut State Park trails is an adventurous yet simple activity to do with kids near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

The park’s history adds an extra layer of adventure. Farragut was once a naval training station, and several trails lead past stone ruins of former buildings and barracks. Benches and logs along the trails make it easy to stop for snacks or rest breaks with kids. In the spring, wildflowers and greenery line the paths, making hikes especially scenic.

Hiding Painted Rocks Along the Trails

One of our kids’ favorite creative activities while camping is painting rocks and hiding them along hiking trails. This has become a popular community activity near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and fits perfectly into family camping at Farragut State Park.

Before our trip, the kids painted rocks with colorful designs and sealed them with a clear protective spray. During our hikes, we hid them along the trail for others to find. Similar to geocaching, families often discover painted rocks tucked near tree roots or along paths and either keep them or re-hide them for someone else.

This simple rock hunting activity adds excitement to hiking and encourages kids to observe their surroundings more closely.

Playgrounds and Swings with Lake Views

Farragut State Park features a playground that is a highlight for kids during camping at Farragut State Park. The play area includes swings, climbing structures, and a rock wall, offering a great break between hikes and bike rides.

Our kids love racing to the swings, which are positioned with peaceful views of Lake Pend Oreille. After a hike, stopping by the playground is a fun way to unwind before heading back to the campsite.

Exploring Lake Pend Oreille While Camping

No list of Farragut State Park camping activities would be complete without time spent on Lake Pend Oreille. The lake is ideal for boating, kayaking, fishing, tubing, and swimming.

Compared to other nearby lakes, Lake Pend Oreille is often less crowded, making it a relaxing choice for families. The Farragut public boat launch offers easy access and plenty of parking. While there can be some algae near the shoreline, the water clears quickly as you move farther out.

Lake Pend Oreille is the largest lake in Idaho. It’s surrounded by parks, picnic areas, and recreation sites throughout the northern Idaho Panhandle.

With its location near Coeur d’Alene, scenic trails, and wide variety of activities, family camping at Farragut State Park is an ideal destination for making summer memories in North Idaho.

πŸ’‘ Essential tips for traveling with our 4 kids! 🧳 πŸ’‘ Essential tips for traveling with our 4 kids!

🧳 Pack light with items that do more

We bring clothes that mix and match, quick-dry layers, fold-flat totes, and activities that encourage creativity. Think art supplies and travel board games. The less we carry, the more we can explore.

πŸ₯ͺ Eat often and try new flavors
We use snack stops and meals to experience local culture. Bakeries, fruit stands, and small cafΓ©s become our favorite spots.

🏞️ Choose simple adventures over packed days
We go on kid-friendly hikes, stop at playgrounds, and tour cultural centers. We visit great houses, historic workhouses, and local museums.

πŸ“± Use screens sparingly
Ideally our kids only use screens on travel days, and with a time limit. Shows and multi-player games can help turn dull afternoons into family fun!

πŸ”¦ Encourage curiosity
We explore as much as we can with our four kids, shopping at markets, using public transportation, and visiting immersive attractions. We find many free activities, and budget for must-see destinations.
