Gluten Free Sugar Cookies Recipe

These gluten free sugar cookies are delicious and easy to make! This recipe is similar to conventional cut-out cookie recipes, except it uses one to one gluten free flour. Follow the instructions below to make amazing gluten free cut out cookies.

Making cookies is a great activity to do with your kids! We often make cut out cookies for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and birthday parties. This recipe is ideal to make beautiful, white, cookie cutter shapes.

Additionally, you can decorate these cookies with homemade icing and sprinkles. Powdered sugar icing is easy to mix up in a few minutes, and you can color it with any shade of food coloring.

Easy Gluten Free Sugar Cookies

Begin by gathering the ingredients to make cut out gluten free sugar cookies. You will need softened butter, sugar, 1 egg, vanilla extract, milk, salt, and one to one gluten free flour. I used Red Mill flour from Walmart, which allowed me to bake beautiful gluten free cookies.

cookie dough creamed butter and sugar

Cream the butter and sugar together using a hand mixer or a stand mixer, for 3 minutes until light and fluffy. After this, add the egg, vanilla extract, and milk and mix again until fully combined.

Once the wet ingredients are fully mixed, add the gluten free flour a little at a time while mixing. I was a bit surprised this recipe didn’t need baking powder, but the cookies turned out beautifully.

The dough will initially appear sandy, but eventually comes together into a moldable consistency.

Chilling the Dough

These cookies turn out best if the dough is chilled when they go into the oven. You can accomplish this in two different ways.

Chill the dough in the bowl until cold, about 30 minutes. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface (with gluten free flour), flatten with a rolling pin, roll out the chilled dough, and cut out cookie shapes. This requires working quickly so the cookies are still cold when they go into the oven.

Chill the cut out shapes on a cookie sheet after you’ve cut them out. This is my preferred method, but it requires refrigerator space. I emptied a shelf of our fridge temporarily to chill a sheet of cut out cookies.

Cut Out Gluten Free Cookies Shapes

Regardless of how you chill the dough (see suggestions above), next comes the fun part! Turn out the dough onto a floured surface (using gluten free flour), and roll it out with a rolling pin. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. I made these cookies approximately 1/4 inch thick. Place the gluten free sugar cookies on a baking sheet lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Bake them at 350 degrees for 12 minutes.

  • Combine the flour and salt. Scoop it a little at a time into the wet ingredients, mixing until fully blended. The dough may appear sandy at first. Keep mixing until the dough reaches a moldable consistency.

πŸ’‘ Essential tips for traveling with our 4 kids! 🧳 πŸ’‘ Essential tips for traveling with our 4 kids!

🧳 Pack light with items that do more

We bring clothes that mix and match, quick-dry layers, fold-flat totes, and activities that encourage creativity. Think art supplies and travel board games. The less we carry, the more we can explore.

πŸ₯ͺ Eat often and try new flavors
We use snack stops and meals to experience local culture. Bakeries, fruit stands, and small cafΓ©s become our favorite spots.

🏞️ Choose simple adventures over packed days
We go on kid-friendly hikes, stop at playgrounds, and tour cultural centers. We visit great houses, historic workhouses, and local museums.

πŸ“± Use screens sparingly
Ideally our kids only use screens on travel days, and with a time limit. Shows and multi-player games can help turn dull afternoons into family fun!

πŸ”¦ Encourage curiosity
We explore as much as we can with our four kids, shopping at markets, using public transportation, and visiting immersive attractions. We find many free activities, and budget for must-see destinations.
