Mealtime Tips for Picky Eaters

by Katie Wallace | Updated: May 23, 2017

Do you have a picky eater? Sometimes it’s about all a mom can handle to get a child to eat their lunch. My kids have gone through stages of pickiness during meals. My oldest loved eating everything as a baby; kalamata olives, goat cheese, spaghetti, artichoke, you name it. She’s become quite a bit more picky but still is often willing to try new foods. My little guy is all about meat and cheese which he eats almost every meal. When kids go through stages of picky eating, parents can use simple strategies to encourage their kids to eat healthy food. I’m excited to share some easy ways to make meals fun and healthy and sneak in some veggies too!

This post was developed in partnership with Similac. All opinions are my own.

1. Make Mealtime Fun

  • Make smoothies! Easily mix up any smoothie combination with banana + yogurt + frozen berries + tangy fruits such as mango or pineapple + spinach leaves + ice!
  • Make these cute strawberry roses.
  • Turn lunch into a project with DIY mini pizzas.
  • Make kitty and puppy kids’ lunch plates.

Cute puppy and kitty kids lunches

I like making meals fun. I’m not willing to craft separate meals for my kids, but I don’t mind making creative food I know they will love. Strawberry roses, sandwich shapes, and homemade macaroni and cheese are always big hits with the kiddos. My kids like eating their food on cute kids’ plates like this colorful Osho silicone placemat which is especially creative for crafting a child’s lunch. I like how this placemat allows me to create a food scene. My kids love eating their quesadillas and Veggie Straws from the cloud and sun-shaped cutouts. It’s also easy to toss in the dishwasher and clean once lunch is over.

Osho Silicone Placemat for fun kids' lunches

This super cute placemat has an extra large design that makes any mess stay on the mat, so all you have to do is clean the placemat, not your table! It’s made with thick food grade silicone that’s BPA-free, PVC-free, and lead-free. The one-piece silicone placemat sticks to the table and eliminates the need for extra bowls and plates and it’s dishwasher and microwave safe making it super easy to warm and clean. My girls love taking turns having their lunch on this unique placemat. A fun lunch makes kids much more likely to eat their food!

2. Offer Easy Healthy Snacks

If your child gets hungry between meals, offer a simple and healthy snack that won’t interfere with their appetite later. Avoid sugar and high-carb snacks and instead whip up a healthy smoothie or offer your toddler one of these Go & Grow by Similac pouches filled with pureed fruits and veggies. Go & Grow by Similac pouches pack in flavors such as Sweet Potato, Apple, Mango, Pumpkin, Banana, and Carrot within an easy to enjoy blended puree. This drinkable snack is flavorful and will help little ones get nutrients from fruits and vegetables and be ready for their next activity. My kids also enjoy picking out their own flavors at the store. These pureed snack pouches are conveniently available at Walmart!

My little guy lacks no enthusiasm for snack time. I often offer him one of these flavorful snack pouches alongside the rest of his meal. It’s nice he can feed himself and eat at his own pace.

3. Ask Your Child What They Like

I’ve started asking my kids what they’d like for dinner. Often the answer is a very reasonable request and me cooking something my 4-year-old daughter likes makes mealtime a lot more successful. Her mealtime favorites are pasta, chicken, and burritos.

My youngest little guy just goes with the flow and is happy eating whatever (for now). He has the biggest appetite and always appreciates a good snack!

4. Encourage Kids To Try New Foods

Even if a child isn’t super on board with a meal, encourage them to at least try it. They may be surprised they like it and trying new dishes can help kids learn to love adventurous foods. If a food isn’t successful, thank them for trying it and let them choose something else. I try to make an assortment of dinner sides I know everyone likes. Easy go-to kids’ foods include cheese quesadillas, grilled cheese sandwiches, baked chicken fingers and spaghetti. I try to regularly make at least one thing I know my kids like, even if I make something else for the adults.

5. Finish With a Bedtime Snack

If the kids eat their dinner, they can also have a healthy snack before bedtime such as a cup of Greek yogurt, a peanut butter cracker, or fresh fruit. We don’t force the kids to clean their plates, but we often save leftover dinner for when they get hungry later.

Which mealtime tips have you found successful for your little picky eaters? Every family enjoys a different combination of personalities and preferences and it’s our job as moms to learn how to navigate each stage!

My son isn’t picky, he eats all his veggies first-so we use these as snacks or a healthy dessert, and he loves them!

My son loved squeeze packs when he was younger. My daughter just turned 1 so we may be introducing them to her sooner rather than later!

TRAVEL | KIDS | ADVENTURES 🌟 Creative family ideas! #createplaytravel

Did you know clothes driers are rare in Europe? 👚👖 Many people line dry their clothes, in an effort to be eco-conscious. When we find the occasional drier at a rental house, it has a water reservoir that we have to empty, almost every load. Often we line dry our clothes, which takes 2 days to dry. 🌟 Learning how to do laundry is one example of how traveling can inspire some lifestyle adjustments. Overall, our family is learning so much and creating so many memories as we explore the world. 🫶🌍🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures! 🌎🩵➡️ follow along! @createplaytravel#createplaytravel #worldschoolfamily #travelwithkids #adventurefamily
Shocker — in France, most candy is made without Shocker — in France, most candy is made without artificial food coloring! Can we do this in the US?? 🙋‍♀️ Asking on behalf of my kids and many other parents! 😄 Here’s why even Haribo is labeled with “sans colorant artificiel” in France:✨ Stricter EU regulations ban or limit synthetic dyes linked to hyperactivity or allergies.🌱 There’s a big cultural focus on natural ingredients and quality over flashy colors.👀 French shoppers read labels and avoid unnecessary additives — especially for kids!⚠️ Plus, any artificial dye used must carry a warning like: “May affect children’s behavior and attention.” (Yikes!)So instead of Red 40 or Yellow 5, French treats get their fun colors from plants — think beet juice, turmeric, spirulina, and carrots. 🍓🌿🌈Honestly? We love it. Simple, clean, and still delicious! 😋Would you try candy colored only with natural ingredients? Let us know! 👇
Major Rome highlight!! Things that surprised us at Major Rome highlight!! Things that surprised us at the Colosseum! 😲🇮🇹Stone passageways surround the arena, with three levels of seating — and beneath the floor lies a maze of underground chambers once used to hold wild animals and gladiators before battle.✨ We learned that the Colosseum could hold over 50,000 spectators, and it was built in just 8 years — incredible engineering for ancient Rome!We reserved special access to the top levels, where only 10 people are allowed every 30 minutes. Our family filled 6 of those spots! 🙌 Having those quiet moments above the arena, with no crowds, was surreal.📸 If you ever visit, definitely consider the extra ticket for this unique perspective!🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures! 🌎🩵➡️ follow along! @createplaytravelHi! When in Rome… 📸🇮🇹 Taking photos at the When in Rome… 📸🇮🇹 Taking photos at the iconic Trevi Fountain was more magical than we expected!💧Built in the 18th century, the Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome — and one of the most famous in the world. Designed by architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, it stands at the junction of three roads (“tre vie”), which is where it gets its name!We discovered there’s a crowd control system now in place — and it made all the difference! We stood in a short line to enter the front viewing area, completely free and without a time limit. We ended up staying for about 30 minutes, snapping photos and soaking in the view alongside just a few dozen other people.✨ It was such a cool surprise to enjoy this spot without battling a huge crowd. Definitely worth waiting for the photo op!📸 Is visiting the Trevi Fountain on your bucket list??🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures! 🌎🩵🌟 Hi! We created unforgettable memories exploring these We created unforgettable memories exploring these iconic Roman landmarks with our kids! 🇮🇹⛲️ Trevi Fountain — Built in the 1700s, this Baroque masterpiece is where three ancient roads once met. The scale and details are incredible! Standing 85 feet tall and over 160 feet wide, it’s one of the largest fountains in the world!🇪🇸 Spanish Steps — Completed in 1725, these 135 steps link Piazza di Spagna to the Trinità dei Monti church above. We all enjoyed the exercise while climbing these iconic stairs. 🏛️ Pantheon – Nearly 2,000 years old, it’s the best-preserved ancient Roman building. Our kids were amazed by the giant columns (each carved from a single piece of Egyptian granite) and the open oculus letting sunlight stream through the dome.Things we learned while traveling # 10 ☀️ History came alive for all of us in Rome!
