Carmel is a little storybook town on the California coast, full of art galleries, boutiques, and one of the prettiest beaches in the state. It has an upscale, romantic reputation, so you might not think of it as a kid destination. But with a little planning, you can find many things to do in Carmel-by-the-Sea with kids. We visited with our 3 small children and found plenty of activities to keep everyone happy.
The trick to enjoying a fancy town with young kids is a mix of wide-open outdoor spaces and short, fun stops. Here are our favorite family things to do in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Explore Point Lobos State Reserve
If you do just one thing in the Carmel area, make it to Point Lobos. This California state reserve is our favorite family stop, and it is stunning. The area has great trails that are perfect for a family hike, including flat walking paths that work well even with a stroller. We spotted numerous seals sunbathing on the rocky outcroppings and crabs hiding in the tide pools. The landscape shifts from dramatic rocky cliffs to peaceful forested areas, so there is always something new around the bend. Kids love the wildlife, and parents love the views.

Play at Carmel Beach
Carmel Beach is known for its large expanses of clean, soft white sand, and it’s free to enjoy. On a mild day the beach is a lovely place to let the kids run, dig, and explore the shoreline. To keep little ones engaged, we like to play a beach version of I Spy. Take turns saying “I spy something green,” and see who can find it first. A game is a fun way to spot sea creatures, shells, and all the little details along the sand. On warmer weekends the beach fills up, so mornings are the calmest time to go. A beach outing with kids is a great way to make memories!

Window Shop Along Ocean Avenue
The heart of Carmel is its walkable main street, lined with whimsical shops. You will find home decor, stylish clothing, a bakery, a bookstore, a hat shop, and a toy store. With young kids, we practice looking without touching while browsing shops. Even just wandering and window shopping in Carmel-by-the-Sea with kids is fun and free.

Try On Hats at the Hat Shop
One of our favorite quick stops is a charming hat shop on the main street. It carries all kinds of hat styles at different price points, from playful and affordable to elegant statement pieces. Trying on hats is a fun, low-cost activity, and the kids get a kick out of seeing themselves in the mirror. I even found a vintage-inspired hat for a gift on one visit.
Visit Thinker Toys
Thinker Toys is a delightful stop for families in Carmel-by-the-Sea with kids. This toy store has a large collection of wooden puzzles, dolls, interactive play sets, and learning toys. Best of all, the store has an interactive play section where kids can try things out. It is a great spot to let little ones play for a few minutes, whether or not you buy a souvenir.

Enjoy Fresh Treats at Carmel Bakery
A trip to Carmel is not complete without a stop at Carmel Bakery. The display case is full of twists and rolls, scones, cookies, muffins, and breads. My daughter picked the most colorful rainbow sprinkle cookie she could find. Grab a treat and a coffee, and take a moment to enjoy the small-town atmosphere.

See the Art of Dr. Seuss
For a fun dose of culture, look for the Art of Dr. Seuss collection, now shown at Dennis Rae Fine Art in Carmel. It is a wonderful way to introduce kids to fine art through a familiar and friendly name. Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Geisel, created paintings and drawings for more than 60 years. Kids recognize his whimsical style right away, which makes browsing an art gallery feel exciting.

Stay at Carmel By The River RV Park
If you travel by RV like we did, Carmel By The River RV Park is a great home base. The spots are beautifully manicured, with hedges, decorative touches, and clear signage. We used the outdoor picnic area which was perfect for family meals and downtime between adventures. Having a comfortable place to nap and regroup makes California road trips and exploring with little kids so much easier.

Enjoy a Family Day in Carmel-by-the-Sea with Kids
Carmel-by-the-Sea proves that even an upscale destination can be a great family stop. Start with a morning hike at Point Lobos, play on the beach, wander the shops, and treat everyone to a bakery stop. Keep the pace relaxed and let the kids lead the fun. As our children grow, we look forward to many more kid-friendly adventures!

Which Carmel activity would your family try first?

Hi, I’m Katie! I’m a homeschool mom who’s traveling the world with my husband and 4 kids. We raised our family in North Idaho and currently live in Mérida, Mexico. I love Jesus, coffee, creative projects, photography, and traveling. I hope you enjoy our creative ideas and family adventures!
