Tucked into the mountains, Wallace, Idaho is a historic mining town that’s a wonderful getaway for families. The whole downtown is walkable and you can find enough to do to fill a relaxed weekend. When we lived in North Idaho, visiting this small town was an easy trip for us. Here’s a few favorite things we discovered in Wallace, Idaho with kids!
I hope you enjoy our family guide to visiting Wallace with kids! I share where we camped, what we did downtown, and two mountain adventures we experienced with our kids.

Where to Stay: Wallace RV Park
We stayed at the Wallace RV Park, set beside a stream and shaded by tall pines. It was a peaceful home base within easy reach of downtown. In the evenings, the kids rode their balance bikes around the campground. One night we walked over to City Limits Pub & Grill for dinner. If you travel in an RV or a camper, this is a convenient spot to camp for a couple of nights.

Explore Historic Downtown Wallace
Downtown Wallace is compact, friendly, and full of character. The whole area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The old brick buildings and storefronts are part of the fun! We spent a happy afternoon wandering in and out of shops.

A few stops worth making in Wallace, Idaho
- Tabor’s Emporium, an antique store packed with old and newer treasures

Take the Sierra Silver Mine Tour
The Sierra Silver Mine Tour is a highlight for families. This easy walkthrough gives you a real glimpse into the history of mining in the region. A guide leads you into the underground tunnels and explains what working conditions were like. We saw some tools the miners used, and learned how silver was pulled from the mountains. The Sierra Silver Mine Tour was educational without being overwhelming; a great homeschool field trip stop!

Ride the Gondola at Silver Mountain Resort
For a bigger adventure, ride the gondola at nearby Silver Mountain Resort. The fully enclosed gondola carries you up to the summit on a scenic 20-minute ride. We saw beautiful mountain views the whole way. At the top, we hiked a bit, picked wild huckleberries, ate a picnic lunch. Of course, our kids loved playing at the playground.
Silver Mountain has something for every season. In summer, families can visit the mountaintop water park. In winter, the resort opens 73 trails for skiing and snowboarding. Even just riding the gondola up and back is a memorable adventure for young kids.
