IPSY Travel Size Makeup Products to Pack for Your Next Trip

by Katie Wallace | Updated: March 18, 2026

Packing makeup for a family trip is a balancing act. You want to look and feel like yourself, but between the kids’ gear, snacks, and travel documents, there’s barely room in the bag for full-sized beauty products. That’s exactly why I love discovering travel size makeup products for a family trip that don’t take over my carry-on.

After years of traveling internationally with our four kids, I’ve learned that the best travel makeup is lightweight, multi-purpose, and small enough to toss in a toiletry pouch. When I tried IPSY BoxyCharm, I was curious to see whether a beauty subscription box could actually deliver products worth packing on a trip. Here’s what I found.

IPSY BoxyCharm travel size makeup products family trip Everything from this IPSY BoxyCharm box fit inside a single travel pouch, a big win for carry-on packing.

Why Beauty Subscription Boxes Are Great for Travel

One thing I’ve noticed after traveling through Europe with kids and toย Mexico with our family: the best travel beauty routine is the one you actually use. If a product is too bulky or too time intensive, it stays in the hotel bag untouched.

Beauty subscription boxes like IPSY BoxyCharm are worth trying for travelers because:

  • The products are often compact or sample-sized. Many items are perfectly proportioned for a travel pouch without needing to pour into small containers.
  • You discover new brands without committing to full-price, full-size products. I likely wouldn’t have found Trust Fund Beauty or Alamar Cosmetics on my own.
  • Multi-use products show up frequently. Cream highlighters, tinted moisturizers, and lip-and-cheek duos are travel staples, and subscription boxes are full of them.

I purchased this IPSY BoxyCharm subscription for $30 to try it out for one month. Here’s what arrived and how each product performed from a travel perspective.

Travel Size Makeup Products: What I’d Pack

IPSY Trust Fund Beauty highlighter

Trust Fund Beauty Glow Cream Highlighter – Pack It โœ“

Cream highlighter from Trust Fund Beauty is exactly the kind of product I reach for on travel days. It’s a small tube and applies with your fingertips (no brush needed). Additionally, it gives skin an illuminating shimmer that works for both a casual sightseeing day and a nice dinner out. I’d even use this cream highlighter as simple makeup for camping at a state park. My daughter enjoys using this compact beauty product too, it’s fun shimmer for girls of all ages.

Why it’s travel-friendly: Cream formulas don’t shatter in transit like pressed powders can. You can dab a little on your cheekbones, brow bone, and even the bridge of your nose in about 30 seconds, which is about all the time you get when three kids are waiting by the door.

Travel tip: Cream highlighters also serve as an eyeshadow base. A tiny swipe on your lids adds just enough shimmer for an evening out without packing a separate product.

Alamar Cosmetics eyeshadow palette

Alamar Cosmetics Eyeshadow Palette – Leave It (or Limit It)

I genuinely love the vibrant teals, golds, and glitter tones in this Alamar Cosmetics palette. The shimmer shades are beautiful for summer. However, the full-sized palette is bulkier than what I’d want in a travel makeup bag.

My travel workaround: I include two or three neutral eyeshadow shades in my makeup bag for a family trip. Tan and natural shimmers are the most versatile compact makeup products since they work for both daytime and evening. If you only have room for one eyeshadow shade, a warm shimmer gold goes with everything.

Alamar Cosmetics eyeshadow

Travel tip: Pressed powder eyeshadows can crack in checked luggage. If you’re packing a palette, cushion it between soft clothing items or keep it in your personal carry-on bag.

IPSY box compact beauty products

Beauty for Real Face Powder – Pack It โœ“

A compact face powder is one of those travel essentials I never skip. Hot weather, long travel days, and airplane air all contribute to unwanted shine. This Beauty for Real face powder is lightweight and has a fair shade that matches my skin tone well.

Why it’s travel-friendly: The compact mirror inside means it doubles as your only mirror for quick touch-ups. I’ve used mine in airport bathrooms, rental car visor mirrors, and once while traveling in Mรฉrida, Mexico before heading to dinner.

Travel tip: If you’re traveling to a humid destination, a mattifying powder is more useful than foundation. It controls shine without adding layers that slide off in the heat.

Lithe Gel Eyeliner – Situational

The gel eyeliner is a nice product, but gel formulas can dry out quickly when exposed to changing altitudes and temperatures during travel. I’d pack this for a trip where I know I’ll have evening plans, but it wouldn’t make the cut for a sightseeing-heavy itinerary.

Travel tip: Pencil eyeliners tend to travel better than gels or liquids. They don’t dry out, won’t leak, and you can sharpen them down to save space.

Red Clay Face Cleanser – Pack It โœ“

A face cleanser might not seem like “makeup,” but keeping skin clean while traveling directly affects how your makeup looks. This red clay cleanser was a new-to-me product that I ended up really enjoying. Clay cleansers are great for travel because they tend to come in smaller tubes and work in any water temperature.

Why it’s travel-friendly: You can use a clay cleanser to remove makeup at the end of a long travel day without needing separate makeup remover wipes (which take up a surprising amount of bag space). One product, one step.

My 5-Minute Travel Makeup Routine

After traveling with our family through England, France, and multiple states in the U.S., I’ve reduced my travel makeup routine to five products and five minutes:

  1. Tinted moisturizer with SPF – This replaces foundation and sunscreen in one step. Essential for any destination.
  2. Cream highlighter – A quick dab on cheekbones for a natural glow. (The Trust Fund Beauty one from this box works perfectly.)
  3. Mascara – I have light lashes, so mascara is the one product that makes the biggest visible difference.
  4. Lip balm with a hint of color – Tinted lip balm replaces both lipstick and lip care.
  5. Compact powder – A quick press across the T-zone to control shine before heading out.

That’s it. Everything fits in a single small pouch, and I can get ready while the kids are eating breakfast.

What I Look for in Travel Size Makeup Products

After testing beauty products across many family trips, here’s my checklist for what makes a product genuinely travel-friendly:

  • Compact packaging – If it doesn’t fit in a quart-sized bag or a small toiletry pouch, it stays home.
  • Multi-use formulas – Cream blush that doubles as lip color, highlighter that works as eyeshadow, tinted moisturizer with SPF.
  • Sturdy containers – Pressed powders in flimsy compacts will crack. Tubes and pots survive luggage handling better.
  • TSA-compliant sizes – Liquids and creams must be 3.4 oz (100 mL) or less for carry-on. Powders and solids don’t count toward your liquid limit, which is a helpful packing advantage.
  • Finger-friendly application – Products you can apply without brushes save space and time. Cream and stick formulas almost always win here.

Would I Recommend IPSY BoxyCharm for Traveling Moms?

If you enjoy trying new beauty products and want to discover compact items that might work for travel, IPSY BoxyCharm is a fun and affordable way to experiment. At $30 for a box of full-sized products, it’s less expensive than buying individual travel size makeup products for a family trip.

My two daughters also enjoyed experimenting with some of these products, which made it a fun bonding activity too. My teen especially loved the shimmery highlighter and eyeshadow palette.

The key takeaway: not every product in a subscription box will be travel-worthy, but the ones that are become staples you might not have found otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you bring makeup in a carry-on bag?

Yes! Powders and solid cosmetics have no restrictions. Liquids, creams, and gels must be in containers of 3.4 oz (100 mL) or less, all fitting inside one quart-sized clear zip bag per passenger. Solid and pressed products like compact powder, eyeshadow palettes, and stick highlighters don’t count toward your liquid limit, so lean on those when packing light.

What is the best type of makeup for traveling?

Cream and stick formulas travel best. They don’t shatter like pressed powders, won’t leak like liquids, and can be applied with your fingers, saving space on brushes and tools. Multi-use products like tinted moisturizer with SPF or a lip-and-cheek duo are especially efficient for packing light on a family trip.

Is IPSY BoxyCharm worth it for traveling moms?

At $30 per month for full-sized products, IPSY BoxyCharm is a cost-effective way to discover compact beauty products you might not find on your own. Not every item will be travel-worthy, but the ones that are can become packing staples for family trips. It’s also a fun way to try new brands before committing to full-price purchases at the store.

How do you pack makeup without it breaking?

Choose cream and tube-based products over pressed powders when possible. If packing a palette, cushion it between soft clothing items or keep it in your personal carry-on bag rather than checked luggage. Sturdy containers like tubes and pots survive luggage handling better than thin compacts. You can also place a cotton round inside powder compacts to absorb shock during transit.

What makeup should I bring on a family vacation?

A minimal travel makeup kit includes five products: tinted moisturizer with SPF, cream highlighter, mascara, tinted lip balm, and compact powder. Everything fits in a single small pouch and takes about five minutes to apply, which is about all the time you get when the kids are ready to head out the door.
