No-Sew Toddler Tutu

by Katie Wallace | Updated: January 21, 2017

My little girls have always loved tutus and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy they are to make! DIY tutus are fast and simple to make out of tulle and these fun sparkly skirts are perfect for dress up, a party, just for fun, and toddler or baby milestone photoshoots. You can easily make a no-sew tutu for your own baby or toddler even if you don’t have any sewing skills or sewing equipment. All you need is a few colors of tulle, a length of elastic and scissors.

First, cut your tulle into even strips. We made our tulle strips about 3 inches wide by 24 inches long. Measure your strips twice as long as you want the skirt to be because you will be folding them in half to create the tulle skirt. We used sparkle tulle as an added glamorous touch!

Measure the elastic around your child’s waist and cut it to size. Secure the elastic ends together to create a circle waistband using hot glue or fabric glue. I prefer hot glue because it dries almost immediately and it holds up fairly well.

Place the circle of elastic around something column shaped to create your work space. I used a paper towel roll but you could use a vase or oatmeal container.

Make a No-Sew Toddler Tutu with looped tulle strips

Fold each tulle strip exactly in half and loop it around the elastic waistband by pulling the loop end through the elastic and tucking the other end of the tulle through the loop. Pull the tulle until snug on the elastic, but don’t tug it so much that it stretches out.

Continue around the elastic waistband, attaching tulle using the looping technique until the entire tutu waistband is covered. For a super fluffy tutu skirt, you can squeeze the attached tulle strips tightly together and pack a lot of tulle onto the waistband. We used alternating colors of tulle strips to create a fun rainbow style!

Once you tie off your last tulle strip, remove the tulle skirt from your column shaped work space and Voila! you have custom designed tulle tutu that you handmade without any sewing required!
