DIY Wooden Fence Board Bench

Sometimes I spend time looking for the perfect thing and other times I create it. I needed a small bench for taking portraits and lifestyle photos of kids and I hadn’t had much luck finding the size and style I wanted. When my neighbor began tearing down his old fence I decided to make my own wooden fence board bench! This DIY carpentry project took about 2 hours to make and I’ve used this bench for so many occasions since then. Anyone with some wood and an electric screw driver can easily create a custom bench too!

First, I assembled the wood I needed. Old fence boards provided cute beveled ends for the back of my bench. The back is for looks only; it doesn’t support much weight because I used old weathered wood.

I used new boards for the bench seat and short 2 x 8 boards for the legs. I attached all the boards together with long screws using an electric screw driver. I also used an extra fence board and some metal brackets to provide additional support for the back of the bench.

My DIY fence board bench turned out perfectly! I’ve used it for many photo shoots and birthday parties. The bench design is a bit tippy so I usually set it against a wall or a post. I am not a carpenter but this was a pretty easy project to design and finish.

Custom Re-purposed Fence Board Bench

A custom bench made from re-purposed wood makes a cute yard accent or whimsical garden seat. The back of my bench resembles our picket fence which coordinates perfectly in our garden.

I’ve used this cute DIY wood bench for indoor photoshoots too. The clean white color provides a neutral spot for taking photos of my kids. My homemade bench is also fairly lightweight so I can easily move it around.

Could you use a small bench? You can easily design and assemble a DIY wood bench in a few hours with leftover boards or re-purposed pieces of wood.
