Welcome to Sprinkle Rush, our kids cupcake baking challenge! My girls love baking, sampling sweet treats, and watching baking show competitions. So we decided to host our own. With a few simple supplies and a timer, we turned an ordinary afternoon into a creative baking adventure. Each child got baking supplies, a simple recipe, and 60 minutes to make and design a batch of six cupcakes (baking time not included).
This kind of hands-on challenge is a favorite creative project at our house. It is part cooking lesson, part art project, and a whole lot of fun. Here is how we set it up, plus a free printable cupcake recipe so you can host your own.

My two girls each worked independently, and sometimes together, to make their own custom-designed cupcakes. Kiera, my older daughter, set out to make lemon cupcakes with lemon curd filling and fresh blueberry icing. Younger sister Sylvie decided to make orange cupcakes with lemon icing. It was so fun to watch them design their cupcakes with pretty edible accents!

Baking is a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen. My girls benefit from learning to follow instructions and carefully use our kitchen tools. By helping me cook, they have learned to use a hand-held mixer, measure ingredients, and crack eggs. This baking challenge was the perfect time to put their skills to the test!

Kids Kitchen Chemistry
My girls loved making their lemon and orange cupcakes and decorating them with tiny treats. Baking is also a great way for kids to explore basic chemistry. In many recipes, the wet ingredients “activate” the dry ingredients, which makes the batter rise in the oven.
My girls learned to first mix together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Next, they whisked together the wet ingredients: melted butter, egg white, cream cheese, milk, and flavoring. Then they added the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients.
Cooking in the kitchen also helps kids build important motor skills. Spooning batter into the lined cupcake tins is great hands-on practice. My girls worked on distributing even amounts of batter into each section of the pan.

DIY Cupcake Design
Decorating cupcakes is the best part! It takes a surprising amount of practice to make beautiful icing swirls on top. My girls loved piping their homemade icing and decorating with edible flowers, chocolate stars, and gummy butterflies.

Judging the Cupcake Challenge
The girls were delighted to have Daddy judge their cupcakes! After working hard on their designs, they each presented their confectionery creations. You can watch the whole reveal in our YouTube video.
My older daughter made lemon cupcakes with homemade blueberry icing. She decorated them with sprinkles, edible white roses, and molded chocolate stars. She added pops of color with gummy butterflies and candy. Inside the cupcakes she added the best surprise of all: tangy lemon curd filling! Her lemon cupcakes won the prize for best flavor.

My younger daughter made orange cupcakes with bright yellow lemon frosting. Her decorations included gummy butterflies, jelly beans, and sprinkles. She even cleverly baked some of her cupcakes inside ice cream cones.

Our Sprinkle Rush cupcake challenge was such a fun way for the girls to spend time together in the kitchen and make creative treats. A kids baking challenge is a wonderful way for kids to learn at home while having a lot of fun. Which cupcake flavors would your kids create?
