One Halloween, I decided to make my baby boy a Prince Charming costume. He looked so adorable in it! The best part is that it was simple to sew. I made the whole pattern by tracing one of his shirts. If you know a few basic sewing skills, you can make one too!

Trace a Shirt to Make the Pattern
I like to trace my kids’ clothing when I sew. That way, I don’t have to buy a pattern. Once you understand how patterns work, making your own is easy. Just remember to add a little extra room for the seams.
For this costume, I used one of my son’s long sleeve shirts. I tucked the sleeves underneath first. This gave me the exact shape of his torso. Then I cut the fabric about 1/2 inch wider all around, to allow for the seams.

Next, I cut out the sleeves. I left room for the seams here too. I also added extra length to turn under the cuffs and to round the top of each sleeve.

Sew the Costume Together
Once the pattern is cut, it’s time to sew! Sewing is my favorite part. Cutting out the pattern is the part I like least.

Add the Royal Details
The details are what make this outfit look like a real prince costume. I added yellow satin fabric down the front and around the neckline. Then I sewed gold trim around the waist. Designing homemade costumes is a fun excuse to get creative!

I also made little epaulets for the shoulders. To make them fancy, I used more yellow satin fabric and added fringe trim. I love how they finished off the look!

Make a Simple Crown
Every prince needs a crown. I made this shimmery accessory out of lace and Mod Podge. These DIY crowns are flexible, easy to make, and fun to customize. You can find the full steps in our lace crown tutorial.

My little guy did not mind being a prince for the day. He was happy to play and swing in his costume!

I love making things for my kids and capturing these little moments. A handmade costume takes some work, but the effort creates such special memories. I hope this inspires you to try making a homemade Prince Charming costume for your own baby or toddler!
