10 Essentials for a DIY Spa Day at Home

by Katie Wallace | Updated: February 16, 2020

Who doesn’t love feeling pampered? A home spa day is a great way to relax and enjoy some quality time with your daughters or friends. My girls love doing spa day activities such as soaking their feet, exfoliating with homemade sugar scrub and painting their nails. You can enjoy a spa day in the comfort of your own home by trying these simple ideas!

Spa Day Essentials

First, gather these pampering essentials to prepare for your home spa day. You can relax to the fullest if you have all your spa basics close at hand.

  1. Medium tubs for foot soaking & chairs to sit in
  2. Hot water (hot tap water works)
  3. Epsom salts
  4. Nail files and clippers
  5. Nail polish
  6. Moisturizing lotion
  7. Cucumber slices
  8. Face masks
  9. Sugar scrub (see DIY recipe below)
  10. Lip balm (see DIY recipe below)

How to enjoy a spa day at home

Soak Your Feet

Enjoy the relaxing experience of soaking your feet, which is an essential for any spa day! Heat water until it’s no hotter than 105 degrees or get it from the tap. Pour the water into the foot soaking tubs. Add a scoop of Epsom salts or a piece of your favorite bath bomb. Sit down and soak your feet in the hot water.

You can also use a nail file or nail clippers to work on your toe nails. Take turns with a friend to enjoy the full pedicure experience. Exfoliate the rough skin on the bottom of your feet using our homemade sugar scrub recipe!

Homemade Mint Sugar Scrub

This homemade sugar scrub recipe is easy to mix up using ingredients you have in the kitchen. Rub this sugar scrub onto rough patches of your skin to make it feel softer and refreshed. To make homemade sugar scrub all you need is sugar, coconut oil and mint extract. It just takes a few minutes to make your own sugar scrub!

Sugar Scrub Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 2-3 drops of mint essential oil or 1 tsp. mint extract
  • 2-3 drop green food coloring (optional)

First, gather the ingredients to make homemade mint sugar scrub. Combine the sugar, coconut oil and mint fragrance in a small bowl. Stir until blended. Add a drop of green food coloring if you want your mint sugar scrub to be green. Homemade sugar scrub has a sandy texture that goes on smoothly thanks to the coconut oil. See our full sugar scrub tutorial here!

To use, scoop out a small quantity of sugar scrub and massage it onto your skin. Store your homemade sugar scrub in a small bowl or tub. This easy mint sugar scrub makes a great gift idea for anyone who loves luxurious body products!

Make Your Own Lip Balm

Homemade lip balm is another great home spa day essential. Of course, you’ll have to make this DIY lip balm ahead of time. Homemade lip gloss and lip balm (including the kind you can get at the farmer’s market) is my all-time favorite body product. Homemade lip balm typically only includes 3 or 4 ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter and a light fragrance. You can also add color or cosmetic glitter for an optional bit of sparkle.

DIY Lip Balm Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. beeswax pellets
  • 1 tbsp. Shea butter
  • 1 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1/4 tsp. coconut extract

Combine the ingredients and heat in the microwave for 1 minute at a time, until fully melted. Pour the lip balm into small containers while it’s still hot. DIY lip balm will thicken as it cools.

Essential Oil Infused Body Products

If you’re not in the mood to make your own body products, it’s worth trying out South of France body care. South of France Sugar Polish is infused with natural essential oils and exfoliating sugar to gently eliminate dead skin cells and rough spots. Deeply moisturizing Shea butter and nourishing sunflower oil leaves your skin smooth, glowing and hydrated. Fragrances include Cherry Blossom, Glazed Apricots and Lavender Fields. Each scent is enhanced with its own unique natural essential oil for mood-enhancing indulgence.

To use, rub on a dab of this moisturizing sugar polish, which smells amazing! I use it on my feet, arms and legs. Sugar polish is also a great way to soften rough patches of skin on your heels or elbows.

South of France also makes milled bar soap in lots of fragrances. Coconut oil and sustainable palm oil work together to create a creamy lather when you rub it on. Natural glycerin and organic Shea butter leaves skin feeling soft and moisturized. I often use bar soap like this at the sink or in the shower. I especially enjoy finding everyday spa essentials in my favorite fragrances!

These spa products are great to have on hand for any time you want to feel a little pampered. I often give myself an end-of-the-day foot soak and pedicure. As I mentioned, homemade lip balm is my favorite kind of lip product to use, because it contains natural ingredients and it’s truly soothing. There’s something extra satisfyingly about making my own body products, but I also enjoy using a few go-to brands of beauty products. Finally, I love using body products that smell amazing without containing artificial ingredients and fragrances. A DIY spa day at home is a fun opportunity for a little pampering and inexpensive relaxation!

Coming to terms with the past, and pressing forwar Coming to terms with the past, and pressing forward with grace, that’s all any of us can do.Lately, I’ve been asking myself some hard questions… especially when it comes to homeschooling. Here’s the truth:I can’t keep homeschooling the way I’ve been doing it.I’m not a teacher in the traditional sense, and I don’t love teaching. That’s not why we chose this path. The real reason we homeschool is because we want our kids to have freedom.🌟 Freedom to learn how to learn🩵 Freedom to discover what they love😀 Freedom to grow in diligence and live out their faith boldlyBut as I wrestle with our present, I’ve also had to face my past.I was homeschooled, too. There were a lot of blessings in that, but also some challenges. I grew up in a conservative environment where the focus was often on sheltering kids. And while I know that came from a place of love, it was hard. Especially as a teenager trying to figure out what I believed for myself. In our family’s younger years, our homeschool rhythm has been pretty relaxed, mostly workbooks and flexible days. But moving forward, things are going to look different. Here’s what I do know about the road ahead (and I’ll share more in upcoming reels):— We’re still homeschooling… just reimagining it.— We’re asking the Holy Spirit to lead our family.— Our kids know the Gospel, and that’s our foundation.— We want to live with intention and boldness.— We’re giving our kids space to try new things while they’re still at home.— I’m praying for a gracious heart when the questions come (because they will come).Maybe this resonates with you. Maybe you’ve felt that tension too, between what you grew up with and what you want to build now.If so, you’re not alone. 🫶🌟(continued in the comments)Follow our journey!

Throwback to a year ago. ❤️ We did it! 🥹😎 I had our baby in Merida MX and with some effort, we got her documents lined up to bring her home. She’s a dual citizen, with double US & MX birth certificates and passports. 🌎🌟It was a great experience! 😌🌄😍 We felt like God was with us, led us through the whole process, and provided for us so tangibly even in the small things. 💗🎬 Watch my YouTube video highlighting what we learned by having a baby in Mexico!🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures! 🌎🩵➡️ follow along! @createplaytravel#digitalnomads #birthingabroad #worldschoolingfamily #adventurefamily #travelwithbaby

Safety is a top priority when traveling with kids! Safety is a top priority when traveling with kids! 🌎🌟 We’ve learned a lot through our experiences. For example, when arranging a ride to the airport in Cancun, we followed these guidelines ⬇️1. We hired a driver through a company that had good reviews. This gave us peace of mind when traveling 4 hours across Mexico ☀️2. We told friends/family about our travel plans including when we left Merida and when we arrived in Cancun. This gave us some accountability 😃3. Finally, we trusted our instincts. We are continually growing in our travel knowledge and intuition. We often know when an arrangement needs to be changed. Often, we meet very friendly and interesting people!➡️ Would you take your kids on an adventure in Mexico? We had a very positive and memorable experience!! 🌴🌟 Inspiring families to live creatively and make memories, through adventures 🌎🩵➡️ follow along! @createplaytravel#createplaytravel #homeschoolfamily #travelwithkids #adventurefamily #worldschooling #kidswhotravel
